Successful learning outcomes don’t necessarily happen on their own. First, you will need to sell your product. And I’m not referring to the monetary aspect, but to pitch it correctly to your potential audience. It doesn’t matter how good your content is if your learners don’t buy your idea first. Oftentimes, developers think that content itself will be enough to ensure success, but it needs to become a desirable experience in the eyes of the customer. It has to create high expectations and be marketed accordingly in order to gain traction.

I’ve seen feedback in a fully self-paced format be implemented both successfully and completely fall flat. For example, the function to host discussions with other learners may be present, but, without the effort to foster a sense of community within the platform, engagement amongst learners can be low or not meaningful. With that, feedback doesn’t have to come from other learners. For example, I’ve built an AI-powered quiz generator for my children that provides custom feedback based on the information in their teacher-provided study guide. With the tools we have today, we can create custom learner experiences with truly personalized feedback.

3 Encourage reflection

A third way to challenge e-learners is to encourage reflection, which is the process of thinking critically and creatively about one's own learning experiences, actions, and outcomes. Reflection can help e-learners to deepen their understanding, to apply their learning to new situations, and to develop their metacognitive and self-regulation skills. However, reflection should also be guided, structured, and meaningful, and not just a superficial or random activity. A fourth way to challenge e-learners is to offer choices, which are options or alternatives that allow e-learners to have some control and autonomy over their learning process and content.
