1 What is experiential learning?

Experiential learning is based on the idea that learning occurs when learners are involved in creating and applying their own knowledge, rather than passively receiving information from teachers or textbooks. According to Kolb's experiential learning cycle, learners go through four stages of learning: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. In each stage, learners engage in different cognitive and emotional processes that help them construct and test their understanding of the world.

También conocido como x-learning, se lleva a cabo a través del descubrimiento y la experiencia. Recordemos que cuando nacemos estamos en una constante absorción de información de nuestro medio y por las experiencias el bebé va asimilando los conocimientos que necesita para "sobrevivir" en un mundo que no está hecho a su medida. Los bebés vienen al mundo del "adulto" y ellos aprenden después de una observación reflexiva que mamá o papá le ayudan a levantarse cuando se cae, que debajo de la cama puede esconderse su juguete favorito y que puede hacerlo llorar un ladrido fuerte del perro del vecino en la noche. Todas estas vivencia por peque?as que parezcan son significativas en el desarrollo del ser humano y considero importante su aplicación.

My students benefit from experiential learning when abroad either for academic purposes or pleasure ones. They encounter at first the difficulty of instant language production , but then after accommodation, they are able to produce extended stretches of language. The context acts as a trigger to their language production which leads to better retebtion and linguistic confidence.

3 How to design experiential learning activities for foreign language classrooms?

Experiential learning activities are tasks that require learners to use the target language in situations that simulate or resemble real-life scenarios, such as role-playing a job interview, conducting a survey, or creating a brochure. When designing these activities, you should consider the learning objectives, learner characteristics, activity format, and feedback and assessment. For example, what language skills do you want your learners to practice and learn? What are their interests, needs, preferences, and levels of proficiency? How will you structure the activity and provide your learners with constructive feedback? How will you evaluate their learning outcomes and encourage them to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses?

Según mi experiencia, los estudiantes valoran aún más el contenido experiencial porque ellos se visualizan en un rol que los motive. La típica pregunta de los estudiantes es: ?Y PARA QUé ME VA A SERVIR ESTO EN LA VIDA? y su pregunta tiene mucha importancia porque la planeación que los maestros hacemos debe tener contenido de valor, tengamos más escucha activa a sus necesidades para que al incluir las actividades de aprendizaje experiencial sean un posible motivador para que el estudiante busque fortalecer su aprendizaje de un segundo o incluso tercer idioma. Es la manera en cómo nosotros como maestros lo presentamos! Valores sus intereses y preferencias. El motor más importante es el de su propia MOTIVACIóN.

4 How to implement experiential learning projects for foreign language classrooms?

Experiential learning projects are longer-term and more complex tasks that involve learners in planning, executing, and presenting a product or a service that addresses a real-world problem or need. For example, learners can design and launch a campaign, a website, or a podcast; they can organize and host an event, a workshop, or a festival; they can collaborate and exchange with a partner class, a community organization, or a global network. When implementing these projects, it's important to consider the project scope (i.e. the main goal, the target audience, and the expected outcome), the project phases (e.g. the main steps and milestones of the project, how roles and responsibilities will be divided and assigned, as well as how coordination and communication with learners and other stakeholders will be managed), the project resources (e.g. tools and platforms to facilitate the project, sources and experts to consult or invite, budget and time constraints), and the project evaluation (e.g. how progress will be monitored and documented, how impact will be measured and showcased, how achievements will be celebrated).

5 How to overcome the challenges of experiential learning in foreign language classrooms?

Experiential learning can present some difficulties for foreign language teachers and learners, such as the lack of time, space, and resources to fit activities and projects into the curriculum and schedule, as well as the lack of confidence, competence, and support to prepare and train learners for real-life situations. Additionally, there can be a lack of alignment, integration, and recognition of experiential learning with other forms of instruction and assessment. To address these issues, you should strive to be flexible and creative in your approach, build partnerships and networks for support, and advocate for the benefits of experiential learning in foreign language acquisition.
