Diversity can be an effective catalyst of innovation. However, it's not that simple. A key success factor of diversity effectiveness is a degree of similarity of thinking between agents, i.e. while being different they can't be "too different". This is a delicate balance, but it's quite also intuitive, because if the members of a team are from such completely different worlds to the point that each other's ideas are not compatible and do not build on each other, the benefits of diversity are not attained. We should also consider the concept of cultural spheres of influence, whereby for example, a team of engineers from different countries may not be very diverse as the "engineering" thinking is dominant over the national influence.

I think it is very important include conflicting aspects and contending potential approaches in documentation process for problem definition. For instance, probably most popular anectode related to this is the "survival bias", where a statistician with a completely inverse understanding of WW2 allied planes' susceptibility to the anti-aircraft weapons, have accurately defined the problem at hand.

The next step to creative problem-solving is to gather as much relevant information and data as possible. This will help you to understand the problem better, and to generate more ideas and options. However, you should not limit yourself to the usual or obvious sources of information. You should seek out diverse inputs, such as different viewpoints, experiences, disciplines, cultures, or industries. Cherishing brainstorm for problem solving is evidently beneficial and plausible. But the real question is why this is being not implemented more effectively despite the circulation of this well structured, formulated rhetoric among corporations. Well, unfortunately, the hardest obstacle to it is probably the mismanagement of the process and somewhat unprofessional "clash of personalities".

I advise all my students and colleagues, whatever their field is, to read about the famous long run Apollo space program. Read books, wikipedia articles etc about it and watch documentary content on Youtube. It is full of inspiring and educative anectodes, particularly on learning from the outcomes.

Diversity in innovation isn't just about inviting people in; it's about changing the shape of the room. Begin by asking simple questions: who owns whose time? Who sets the rhythm? Who chose this innovation framework? Who benefits? Otherwise, it’s all 'innovation theater' with solutions designed 'for' rather than 'with'. Placing an intersectional lens upstream is the only way to challenge institutionalism, solutionism, and universalism in design, legitimizing diverse ways of knowing and producing new knowledge.
