It's useful but it has to be done in the right place. Since it costs you some tension, you should only use it when you know exactly what you're doing.

The best scenes in my opinion can nail the cross cutting is the misunderstanding scene. Write a scene in which both the characters have fallen into the trap of a misunderstanding and are interpreting the scene in their own way. The audience will be moved by those scenes and it creates an excitement in them to read further.

Cross-cutting should enhance the story, maybe add some suspense or a conflict, but there is nothing worse then when a book or story hops back and forth in time and place for no reason and does nothing than confuse the reader.

Don’t forget the connection threads. Many even well established writers in TV sometimes forget to close the loops. If we are creating a loop somewhere in the story which is supposed to close after a scene, it must be closed or it leaves the audience confused about the story line.
