In my experience, nothing sparks the imagination quite like a stunning photograph. Once I see it, I start to picture myself there (usually it’s on a beach with a few palm trees), and then planning commences. Well, let me back up and say that my first Google search after seeing the photo is to ensure I can afford to visit. Once that is confirmed, it’s game on. Otherwise, I gain inspiration from others’ stories. I’m an avid SCUBA diver, so I soak up all of the information shared with me about the best dive locations people have explored and tuck it away for later adventures.

The best way to find inspiration is to write a list of your favourite things to do: are you a foodie, a wine afficionado, a museum enthusiast or a people watcher? When crafting a vacation itinerary, I strive for balance because no one needs to feel burnt out from their holiday. This typically looks like incorporating relaxation alongside exploration. I think the ideal is to mix a good amount of excitement with plenty of relaxation. No vacation is complete without some good old fashioned fun, but it won't do you any good if you don't have any energy. You can spend one day riding a giant roller coaster, and then the next day sightseeing or relaxing on the beach. Sometimes you can mix the two! There are places where you can ride around on a speed boat and go fishing.

There is freedom in flexibility while traveling, because you’re leaving the door open to endless possibilities. Instead of having a structured, stringent itinerary, I opt to leave some time open to see what adventures I can stumble upon. I also always make conversation with the locals I encounter and get their suggestions on what I shouldn’t miss seeing and eating. When plans go awry, as they tend to do, having alternative choices is a must. If you’re traveling to a location during a shoulder season, ensure you have a selection of both indoor and outdoor activities planned, so you don’t end up stuck in a hotel. Also, buy travel insurance. You could not need it, but you won’t know until it’s too late.

There is an say that goes here back in the African Continent that in Africa we have time and i have use it since i join the industry and i have always remind my clients that we have time and time is only against us when the sunset. so i am very much flexible and have time. i can wait patiently for hours without trouble

The thing everybody should learn about life is that plans change. An itinerary should be viewed are more like guidelines than a hard and fast ruleset. You might find out when you get to a place that one of the major places you planned on visiting is closed for whatever reason. Well you can't just sit around the whole time. Always be on the lookout for alternatives. Also, it doesn't hurt to check out what the locals visit. Sometimes you'll find that the tourist trap locations are often the worst places to visit. The locals know what the best stuff is.

Slow down and you will open up the opportunities to spend time interacting with locals. When you have filled every day with activities attractions and not a spare minute in between you don't leave time for the serendipitous moments. My fondest memories from my travels are often the times I spend talking with local people and learning more about their unique culture. I have shared meals, tea/coffee, and gone on day trips with locals. These are the truly unique experiences that help me to learn and grow the most while traveling.

After you have selected a travel location, do some digging into what the place/people are known for and experts in. Not only would you be learning a new skill, but you also have an opportunity to learn more about their culture. For example, Venice is known for their glass, so while I was there I took a glass blowing class. During my time in Amalfi, I took a pasta making class (and sampled some fantastic limoncello). These classes left me feeling like I had authentically experienced Italy and grown from it.
