As a Community School Coordinator, I encourage of our partners-formal and informal-to engage with our community. Formal partners understand that their work must align with our academic learning goals. This is our non-negotiable. Everything that is done must address one or more of the goals in some way,i.e., art integration, science, or mentoring. With informal partners, we ensure that events where they are invited are supporting a targeted goal or purpose, i.e., health and wellness, workforce development, or academics. We celebrate their expertise and welcome their leadership in fostering positive experiences for our community.

Some of the most beloved community gatherings in our town are the county fair and our local zoo. We partner with both of those entities to provide tickets to our families who provide feedback for our “Local Control Accountability Survey,” easentially California’s fiscal mechanism to provide additional supports to our students of highest need. It’s a great solution- families are excited, and we are able to help and sustain wonderful local nonprofits who share our values regarding helping our kids have great learning opportunities as well as fun!

Make sure you have a plan to follow up, don't expect the community to reach out to you just because you gave them a flyer, give them the ability to reach out but also have a plan of how you will follow up with them to build the engagement needed.
