For communication that really lands, I've found authenticity is key. If you speak, write, or create honestly and openly from the heart in a way that feels natural and comfortable to you, you will make a connection. Having the courage to be vulnerable is essential, owning your fears, mistakes, and failures enables others to do the same. I find I'm much more inspired by a success, a healing, or an achievement when I've also heard how that person moved through those kinds of challenges. Don't shy away from mentioning the gritty, tough times because it's in that crucible that true strength and resilience are forged. An approach of, "I always have all the right answers" can seem impossibly perfect and unachievable. Keep it real and human.
One of the most common communication mistakes is being vague, ambiguous, or long-winded. This can lead to confusion, misunderstanding, or boredom among your audience, which can reduce their motivation and interest. To avoid this, you need to be clear and concise in your communication. You can do this by using simple and direct language, avoiding jargon and filler words, and organizing your ideas into a logical structure. You should also use examples, stories, or analogies to illustrate your points and make them more memorable and relatable. By being clear and concise, you will be able to communicate your message effectively and persuasively.

We are responsible for the impact we create through our words. As a society, we have been programmed to respond quickly and use acronyms. Texting, specifically, is more logic based. Misunderstandings occur on a regular basis. We should invite others to expand intuition and take a more balanced approach to communicating. We are meant to connect. Old fashioned face to face communication allows us to experience content, emotion and body language. Utilizing this methodology will prevent error and be time and cost effective.
Another way to use communication to motivate and inspire others is to show enthusiasm and positivity in your voice, body language, and words. Enthusiasm and positivity are contagious and can boost the energy, mood, and confidence of yourself and others. You can show enthusiasm and positivity by using a warm and friendly tone, smiling and making eye contact, and using positive words and phrases. You should also avoid negative words and phrases, such as "can't", "don't", or "but", that can undermine your message or create doubt or resistance. By showing enthusiasm and positivity, you will be able to communicate your passion and vision and inspire others to join you.

In my experience working with college students, it makes a huge difference when I praise them for small accomplishments. That’s because they are very critical of themselves and don’t appreciate how small improvements in their academic habits are what will lead to larger accomplishments. I love seeing them smile when I point out the good things they’ve done or how far they have come from when we started working together. Feedback and recognition are essential components of communication that can motivate and inspire others to improve, grow, and achieve. Feedback is the information you give or receive about the quality or outcome of a performance or behavior, while recognition is the expression of appreciation or praise. To make the most of these techniques, it's important to give feedback and recognition regularly and timely, as well as specifically and constructively. Additionally, ensure that your feedback and recognition are sincere and genuine, as well as proportionally and appropriately given. By providing feedback and recognition in this way, you will be able to communicate expectations and standards, as well as your support and gratitude, which can motivate others to continue or change their performance or behavior.
Finally, you can use communication to motivate and inspire others by asking questions and inviting input. Open-ended questions, such as "What do you think?" or "How do you feel?" require more than a yes or no answer. Probing questions that challenge your audience to think deeper, like "Why do you say that?" or "What is the evidence for that?" can also be beneficial. Additionally, positive questions that focus on strengths, opportunities, and solutions are ideal for motivating and inspiring others. Invite input from everyone and acknowledge their input to show your respect and trust. Asking questions and inviting input will demonstrate your interest and curiosity, as well as motivate others to express themselves and learn from each other.
