How can you use communication to address immigration reform?

We need to understand and narrate, first and foremost, the needs and the contributions of different types of immigrants. One of the biggest errors in policy communication is conflation without distinction. A political asylee is not the same as a world-renowned scientist. One addresses our need to extend humanitarian relief while the other, our need to gather the top talent for our advancement. Let us begin there.

I agree but I would add that it’s also important to know what speaks to you. Because if it speaks to you, then you will be passionate about it, and that passion will inspire others. For example what speaks to me is data. So when I see compelling statistics about how much immigrants contribute to our economy, the percentage of noble prize winners and founders of big companies who are immigrants, etc., etc., that really speaks to me and therefore that is the type of thing I can get passionate about in my communication regarding immigration reform. This of course is different for everyone and so you should find what speaks to you and focus on that in communicating regarding immigration reform.

Employment based immigration is a driving positive force in our country. By fostering open dialogue about the significant impact that immigrants and diversity bring to our country, we can bridge gaps in knowledge and dispel misconceptions of immigration issues. Social media platforms are a powerful avenue for sharing stories, advocating, and mobilizing public opinion. When we allow room to hear the voices of employers and foreign workers, we create a collective narrative that humanizes the immigration experience and its challenges. An understanding of these real challenges generates empathy and compassion, fostering a sense of needed shared humanity.

Core Elements to Understand: Historical Context: Trace the history of immigration policies in the country. Understand past reforms, their motivations, and their implications. Current Policies: Familiarize yourself with the existing immigration laws. Note the major provisions, criteria for entry, pathways to citizenship, and any controversies. Economic Implications: Study the economic impact of immigrants, both documented and undocumented. Understand their roles in the labor market, contributions to the economy, and the economic arguments for and against immigration. Human Rights Perspective: Recognize the human rights issues associated with immigration, such as detention practices, family separation.

A key communication strategy is framing immigration as an opportunity, not just a problem. Immigrants bring fresh ideas, diverse skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and vitality to communities. This is very difficult. Immigration is a topic that tends to engender deeply held (and long held in the case of older people) views. The increasing polarisation of many societies as due to near 50:50 results in elections, such as Presidential elections in the United States and the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom and Gibraltar, alongside the stoking of so called 'culture wars' by some politicians and elements of the media, does nothing to help advance the collective debate on the issue of immigration. The only way to try and get your points across is to state your viewpoint and provide the person with reputable, independent sources of information which back up your claims. Good luck!
