Write as much as you can. Writing is a skill that can be developed just like sales or customer service. You need to keep exercising that muscle and the best way to do that is to just keep writing. Write an email to a friend you haven't spoken with in a while. Write and record a new voicemail greeting. Write instructions for your grandmother on how to use her new remote. Just the simple act of structuring sentences and writing out prose helps work out your writing muscles. Once writing feels very comfortable, start reading other work for the purposes of critiquing it and thinking about how you would've approached it differently! Don't forget that writing is a career skill but it's also so much fun, never lose sight of that.

Passion about subject matter, clarity of thoughts, plain english and simple and short propositions are key to writing. Writing also enhances ability to think holistically!

Niche down into your special interests, or read more broadly from a variety of categories. Medium is always looking for writers, and you might like to try writing for any of the multiple publications on Medium. This will allow you to explore your own interests and to see what people are interested in engaging with you about.

In writing, I've learnt to accommodate constructive criticism, especially from more experienced writers in my niche. Often, people shy away from writing because of the fear of reviews or critiques. But there is a need to accept criticism graciously because it helps to better your craft as a writer.

Don't hinge your livelihood on a gamble, which is what exploring a niche is. There are wonderful organizations that need volunteers all the time. Write something for them.

First, the honest truth is having a passion for writing doesn't necessarily mean you'll make a great career out of it. But, it does help in navigating the path. I'll advise anyone who desires to venture into the career of writing to explore! Explore various niches of writing and settle on one you feel most connected to. That way, you can thrive because you passion will be well exploited.

As an author, what I’ve noticed myself is that, no matter where you decide to write, if your content isn’t deemed to be ??understandable??, people unfortunately won’t read it nor react to it. I'm a fiction writer and a freelancer. I consider that if I'm not writing, I'm unemployed. Thus I keep working and producing samples of new niches, coming back to edit them, and adding them to my portfolio just in case a client comes along who wants some specific work done. If I say, "I'll have it ready for you in a jiffy," I am likely to lose that client unless they are paying for a trial. It's far better and impressive to send a document and say, "Does this style meet your needs?"

A thought to consider. Carry works of other people you like and explain why. By way of examples, I make notes of those who inspire, offer lessons, and whose works I have deployed to implement in my own work. I can say it has worked for me. With the benefit of hindsight, it demonstrates humility, a willingness to learn, and awareness of what else is going on. If I could put it bluntly, if I could copy the greats, I would. But I cannot. However, I aspire to be like them and make no bones about that.

Hunter S. Thompson said in an interview that before writing he would type a couple of pages from Hemingway or Steinbeck just random pages. He said you can learn a lot from just typing the words of a great author. I do the same thing with Steinbeck and Thompson, and he was absolutely correct you learn syntax, cadence, style, and oddly how to develop your own unique voice and style.

One can find stories in day to day life : at work, with family, friends and frankly just about anywhere. One can keep one’s heart, ears and mind open and visualise and comprehend learning, experiences, challenges and emotions. And it’s not difficult to put yourself in another persons shoes and imagine. I have said this before, if we have trouble in thinking about what to write, write what we think..and it could be emails, notes, journals, WhatsApp messages, work presentations etc we will slowly figure out patterns and areas of liking..

Writing is not a career. its the daring escape fróm a career. Taking off, at night, at 30 below, from the Gulag, for thousand miles of blizzards and wolfs. If you pursue a career, you end up in management, on the board, on Golf courses, in country clubs. Sucking up, kicking down and ending up on top, where its lonely. To be a writer, means you choose a different path, a lonely path, a sorry, misty path with no guarantees for succes and an almost 100% guarantee for total failure. But on the bright side. Writing does mean the absolute end of your sorry career. Congrats with that.
