How can you use CAD/CAM software to design sustainable packaging that minimizes waste?

Like Marriott Global Design, have all the sustainability requirements in our BIM prototype model so it’s all built in to the program

An overall suggestion is to follow a standard namely ISO19650 nomenclature. BIM in this stands for Building Informations Modelling, a verb. The "BIM-modell" as refered to in this text should according to ISO19650 be named PIM, Project Information Modell. When PIM is delivered and used in facility management it changes name to AIM, Asset Information Modell. ISO19650 also describes how requirements of PIM should be done for different purposes. One of many pruposes is of course conncted to environmental calculations (ex. LCA), reporting when in use or recycling.

BIM can be the perfect solution. Firstly, BIM can provide a virtual model not only with architectural design, but with structural and MEP disciplines, avoid inconsistencies during the construction phase and as a result minimize waste. By adding all the information properly, the simulation can be accurate and useful for all BIM dimensions. The model will provide information not only for construction phase, but until the operation phase. Which BIM dimension has its purpose and in the case of sustainability the model should achieve the 7th dimension, where energy consumption will be analyzed, and the building lifecycle. Some BIM software needs another apps to complement analysis, this highlights the importance of interoperability (IFC).

CAD/CAM software can assist in modeling and simulating different design options, assessing the (LCA) life cycle impact and make data-driven decisions. For example, Masdar City in Abu Dhabi is a planned sustainable urban development relied heavily on CAD/CAM. The precise planning and manufacturing of building components using CAD software allow for greater energy efficiency, reduced material waste, and improved construction quality by optimizing designs, material usage, and construction processes. It lowered energy consumption which contributed to a more sustainable built environment. IKEA's "Flat-Pack" is designed and optimized using CAD software; using flat-pack packaging minimizes transportation space, reducing carbon emissions and waste.

Sustainable packaging design is a highly complex creative process with a myriad of constraints and variables that must be rationalized and optimized. CAD tools are essential for data creation and design analysis for sustainable choices. CAM allows for digital prototyping to further analyze and validate physical design choices. Sustainable design will balance environmental, human and economic considerations. Design iterations, variable adjustments and what if scenarios and algorithms will generate the data needed to allow analysis by AI to point to optimal solutions. When solutions are narrowed down, physical testing with CAM may still be warranted. AI is clearly going to be another tool in the box for sustainable packaging design.

As an amateur product designer, I would say this is something I resonate with. CAD/CAM software has in the past allowed us to review multiple iterations of the package design that make the most use of the material and allow us to avoid wastage.

Standardizing our packaging sizes we optimized carton nesting and doubled the number of products we could ship on an air or ocean freight pallet, effectively cutting our shipping costs in half. It's a bit of a game of Tetris but starting by minimizing the number of variables by standardizing product sizes makes the task easier. Approaching the packing task as a game can make it fun for the CAD operator or programmer charged with the task.

Design is the answer, CAD and CAM are just the very needed expediting and refinement, tools. It is the principles of good design that truly transform CAD and CAM into the ultimate execution tools. Drawing from traditional design methods like origami, user experience-based design, and design sprints, these methods and arts are the driver, whilst CAD and CAM serve as the high-performing car. In short, People ignore designs that ignore people, and waste loves design that promotes waste.

Use of BIM software to create 3D models of buildings and facilities, which can be integrated with CAFM systems to provide a more comprehensive view of the facility. Integrated CAFM systems with BIM offer real-time insights into the condition of heritage buildings, enabling proactive structural integrity monitoring, deterioration detection, and maintenance scheduling. Furthermore, BIM assists in identifying potential risks, including structural issues, water infiltration, and environmental factors, facilitating the development of risk mitigation strategies to safeguard the building's heritage value.

Smart Design Elements: Leveraging CAD/CAM software, you can seamlessly weave smart elements into your packaging. Enhanced Functionality: For instance, it can monitor temperature, humidity, or freshness and promptly notify customers or retailers in case of irregularities. It's packaging that's not just passive but actively protective. Information and Education: Your packaging can be transformed into an informative medium. This not only enriches the user experience but also encourages them to consider reusing or recycling the packaging. Sustainability Synergy: Smart integration serves a dual purpose. It enhances the functionality of your packaging while fostering sustainability.

From an agile standpoint, this step is all about mitigating risks. CAD/CAM software takes the lead, allowing you to evaluate your design rigorously. Tools like finite element analysis and stress testing become your allies, providing a comprehensive examination of your packaging's structural integrity, stability, and safety. The agile approach thrives on adaptability and precision, and CAD/CAM software offers both. This phase isn't a mere validation; it's an assurance of sustainability. You're not just crossing your fingers and hoping for the best; you're systematically verifying functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.

CAD/CAM softwares are now rapidly getting inbuilt with AI and a lot of technical intervention that earlier needed a deeper knowledge base is now available in simple optimised clicks. Saving space, using the best materials, conserving materials, the best optimised designs, calculating carbon footprints and lifecycle of products etc are all great pros that one can consider.

From my experience, the thinking process before you open your CAD software is much more important than the software itself. Ask yourself: 1. Does this product truly need packaging? Or is it only the place for branding and ingredients? - In which case, there are printers that allow for laser printing on foods, for example. 2. If yes, to what extent? Perhaps not all of your product needs to be wrapped in plastics? Paper might do? 3. Can this be: - reduced - reused - recycled?
