The idea is fantastic. I'd definitely try to implement it in the context of an unit where the trigonometry concepts are being introduced or assessed. The fresher the content, the richer the opportunities for a successful application. Sharing students' projects with the community becomes essential here. As students present their progress and findings, they aren't only reviewing the content, but also impacting the beliefs of their audience on the utility of applied mathematics.
Backwards planning is ideal for this. Creating a final project and saving exemplars will go a long way in helping learners understand the expectations. It will also help the instructor plan by evaluating if its meeting the learning goals, what steps are required, and materials needed. Also using a rubric to connect the project to the learning goals explicitly. The rubric can be used by the learners so they know exactly what their learning target is, and be a tool for providing clear feedback. I like to use the math practice standards as a guide for rubric creation.

Another great art project is to have students fold a simple origami figure. I liked the jumping frog the best. This activity definitely requires patience and practice in following directions. Then have students unfold their frog. Yes, there will be whining! Next, ask them to identify and label geometric figures like an acute triangle, a trapezoid, parallel lines, a transversal. Challenge them further by telling them their figures cannot overlap. At the end of class, they will be amazed at how quickly they can refold the frog since their fold lines are already present. This activity always provided a fun review of geometric terms. If there is time, students can race their frogs or see which frog jumps the highest.

Topics covered under this art section - counting, more /less, heavy/light, big/small, one/many at beginners level to name a few. Measurements shapes, division, addition, subtraction, Tens/Ones, skip counting.. Any topic can be Art/craft based topic. Visual and sensory learning can enhance their interest towards Maths. Learning by doing can be inculcated through Creative activities.
