It allows the system to learn useful patterns and structures from raw audio waves without needing human-written transcripts. Techniques like contrastive learning and masked prediction allow the system to detect the important features that distinguish speech from background noise. This helps it learn representations of sounds that it can then use to recognize words. After learning these representations from unlabeled data in a self-supervised way, the system can then fine-tune on a smaller set of labeled examples. This boosts its performance over just training on the labeled data alone.
