How can you use active listening to inspire others and create a shared vision?

- In my experience, active listening, a cornerstone of effective leadership, involves not just hearing but understanding. As Stephen Covey once noted, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” By truly comprehending others’ perspectives, you can build rapport, foster trust, and collaboratively craft a shared vision. This creates alignment and inspires a shared sense of purpose, which is essential for successful leadership. Try also to learn coaching competences to develop deeper listening skills.

Attentive listening is a must if you are to emerge as a servant leader - first listening to understand, then being understood. But the idea of active or generous listening, as Rachel Naomi Remen or Henri Nouwen put it, adds an intention: You listen to welcome strangers into your presence, you listen to enable them to take their own words more seriously and to discover their true nature. Henri Nouwen framed listening as an act of hospitality. How can you listen to make others feeling seen and heard?
