The 4MAT model, developed by educational consultant Bernice McCarthy in the 1980s, is based on the notion that people have different learning preferences and styles, and that effective instruction should accommodate these. According to the model, there are four types of learners: imaginative, analytic, common sense, and dynamic. Imaginative learners are drawn to personal meaning and connections and learn best by feeling and watching. Analytic learners prefer facts and logic and learn best by thinking and watching. Common sense learners are more interested in practical applications and problem-solving, which they can do best by thinking and doing. Finally, dynamic learners are attracted to creative possibilities and action, which they can understand best by feeling and doing.
