This is so true! It's very easy to try and be a jack of all trades (even genres), but people are typically looking for specialists in specific areas. While it does happen for some, it's not likely a jazz pianist is going to look to a heavy metal mixing engineer for their next project (unless they're specifically going for a new different sound).

I'll give an honest answer - I think it's extremely tough. I have made very little money through audio engineering/production and related disciplines. People just don't seem to value the work. Because so much material is available for free from the internet, in a creative multi media project, audio requirements can be filled for very little cost or nothing at all. The UK recording studio market has been stagnating for years with the advent of 'in the box' home studio set ups becoming so much affordable. Tons of 'how to' videos on YouTube available to tell how to get the job done. .....

Love it. I'd add that if you don't have your own material or friends that you can get stuff from, don't be afraid to offer "free" services in exchange for the right to use that work in your portfolio.

Major key. Don't fall for the "if you build it they will come" or that word of mouth is the only way. In today's market there's far too many free ways to market yourself. Staying top of mind can often times be the difference between someone choosing you over others. Just think, as well know as McDonald's is, they still advertise regularly.

Yes diversification is good - but skill sets too - barista, motorcycle repair, equipment fixing / bending/ making, screen printing, social media, video / content creation/ language/ crowdfunding and vehicle Maintenance are all good places to start ! Make yourself indespensible in every way !!

Consider partnering/collaborating with others. Often times the best way to grow is to grow with others. If you know someone that does videos perhaps you could work with them on sweetening their audio. This is a great partnership for people who grow their video businesses to do lot's of events ad corporate shoots. Being their go to audio person can be huge. That's just one example. Look for other partnership opportunities that make sense for you.
