How can you troubleshoot registration issues in print production for graphics?

For an offset press, plate and blanket packing can take care of it. If you have a color printing short, take some packing from behind the plate which lets the plate cover more of the plate cylinder. Then add that packing you took from behind the plate and add it behind the blanket, which keeps the pressure the same between the plate and blanket for dot quality. When you have the opposite problem, like the color is printing long, take packing from the blanket and add it to the plate. This shortens the plate around the cylinder.

One way color to color registration if affected is from dirty or worn gripper pads. Powder can build up on the pads causing mis register. One of many things to keep an eye on.

In Flexo, Plate mounting is critical to registration, including plate cylinder rollout diameter and plate mounting accuracy. If you're not mounted properly, it's a battle.

Try and make sure grain direction is correct for press, this will help with sheet distortion. Also make sure cylinder packing is correct for plate and blanket cylinders. Use registration marks on all colors to line up each color to help determine which color is out of register.

Digitally generate a 4 color , 1 inch square grid pattern on the ENTIRE / Max print surface your press or printer is capable of. Use a "dirty " color for yellow so it can be seen. Print the overlay at different speeds and record the sample speeds. This will show any movement dynamically or statically from any samples taken and go from what you see. Many issues will be evident and you continue to calibrate your process.

In digital presses I have seen registration issues from mechanical issues (grippers, belts, relay speeds), media specifics (grain direction, inorganic substrate material, thickness vs threshold of machine), as well as lack of software updates, or limited capability within the driver's settings. Sometimes an update works, sometimes an overhaul on using a compatible RIP software for the device is the solution. Check trap in digital file. Many times I see digital files untrapped because it is thought it is not necessary. This is not always the case. Check trap settings and double check they are being applied correctly.

In Offset, ensure that each plate is correctly aligned and there is no distortion. Make sure your grippers are cleaned and aligned or it can cause mis-registration. Too much fluctuation in temperature and humidity can affect paper stability - paper warping or expansion, thus, registration issues.

The best way to avoid registration issues at the graphics level is communication with your production team! All new projects should be shown to an experienced production manager or lead press operator who through their knowledge of press capabilities and limitations can often spot trapping and bleed problems before the project proceeds to plates and the press room. By taking this step, often production problems can be solved before its slowing down production on the press room floor.

Also, depending on media and temperature of fusing, physical shrinkage may occur after first side fusing, resulting in misregistered second side. Often there are settings that can compensate for this issue. Always measure the image at known points to confirm proper positioning and magnification when dealing with digital equipment.

Regularly checking your software for latest version will help you avoid error due to incompatibility issues. Thus keeping everything in check helps maintain smooth performance.

Its important to check the design well while separating the colours to CYMK. Transfering the image to the PLATE the cornermarks to be in place for registration.

With all the advancements in technology over the last decade or two, I would say that if your makeready is taking longer than five minutes, or you are having registration problems and it does not fit, gum up the plates, take the job off the press. There is either a fit problem inside pre press that requires adjusting, or there is a physical problem in press. Could be a loose blanket, packing is not on right, pressure is off, or.. my favorite which will haunt you from job to job; someone in the course of maintenance, loosened the cylinder bolts too far and forgot to reset them. They hold the plates in place, and seemingly might start off well and then bang, all the sudden the press looses register. Remember you heard it here.

Im in opposite view - newer use new software, there can be bugs and many printers dont understand new standarts. Before updating on production cycle check for possible problems

From a digital standpoint, ensuring your jets nozzles are clean and all firing correctly within their voltages will put you in the right direction. Velocity alignments, and re adjusting your bi directional can improve your printers quality as well as checking your carriage height isn’t too far above your substrate.

Printer registration check and calibration must be first thing to look at. And must be made on regular basis, if you need consistent results

When using print production black and white printers (Toner based) you must verify horizontal and vertical sizes match up on fronts and backs to ensre they are in register.. Changing imaging belts, printheads and ither parts equires recalibration to ensure front and back registration as well as insuring graphics close to the edge of paper don't get cut off. YES black and white Toner based printing can have registration problems. Still learning after 40 years in the trentches.

The question needs to be divided into several subsections. First, from a design perspective, are you setting your traps? Are you exporting all the sub files correctly? If all this is done well we move to the next step, the printers pre press. Are there any file substitutions between the design files and the RIP files. If so address during proofing. Lastly the paper and the press. Ahh it always comes down to that. An old press is like an old car, it is all how you take care of it, but newer presses have auto plate bend, automatic plate insertion etc, that make everything more precise in way less time. If you pull 20 sheets and the registration is off, either side to side or within the image take it off. # 1 stock always!

It's quite important to know that CMYK may not look the same on an RGB screen.... a lot of new designers don't take this into consideration while designing. Personally, I design for Print using the RGB colour mode for pixel (photoshop) designs before I eventually convert to CMYK for Print.

There are many problems that can cause registration issues. - Web tension - Loose blankets - Crooked plates - DOT gain incorrectly calibrated in pre press - Dryer temps Start with the easiest solution while running; check web tension. Look for the web bagging between units. Watch the web for fluttering as it could be a baggy roll. Tighten the blankets. Look at the crosshairs and tic marks on the plate while doing so to ensure they were hung squarely. If all else fails check with prepress to ensure there settings and configurations are correct.

One key ingredient is understanding the creation of the design and the intention of its use to print. The term print ready also needs consideration of the device it is going to printed on and potential finishing considerations. It is just as important for an in plant printer to a commercial printer with advanced pre press capability. Think before you print and get the best results every time.

All input here has been valid. One important point that seems to have been missed is the substrate (paper) itself. Paper characteristics play a huge role in achieving tight registration. Does the substrate retain moisture? How does substrate material content + ambient atmosphere effect paper dimensional stability? For example, high cotton content creates potential for shrinkage of cut sheets, especially in high moisture atmosphere.
