How can you troubleshoot older equipment in fiber optic networks?

The first step is to identify what the problem actually is. Is the light level reduced? Are there errors? Which direction is the problem evident in (A->Z, Z->A, both)? Different issues may present similarly, other are glaringly obvious.

Personally, I always take a distance measurement with the OTDR before I put a VFL on it. Getting a distance reading could tell me whether or not there is a problem before having to make a trip to the other end, assuming that you know the approximate distance from end to end.

All the FO equipment, OTDR, LIGHT SOURCR, POWERMETER, SPLICING MACHINE required timely calibration and replacement of the parts to make it functional.

First is to check where is the problem, indoor or outdoor, the issue in the equipment itself or the fiber cable , you have to know the full diagram of the ODN in your mind so you be able to discover where is the issue easily

A basic set of test equipment includes a power meter, an optical time-domain reflectometer and a visual fault locator--available for less than $10,000. 1) Go to a transaction point or the wiring closet and use an optical power meter to verify the presence of outside optical power.

1) First check where the FOC is terminated at both end. 2) Then for any type of FOC use VFL (Laser Light) and check if your getting light on other side or not 3) If light is not coming then obviously fiber is cut somewhere. 4) To get the exact meter where there is a cut use OTDR which can test both SM & MM cable. 5) OTDR will auto detect if its new one but for older one insert manually and check for both mode i.e. SM and MM 6) Get the traced meter reading and splice the cut portion.

Clean the connectors with the approved cleaners, not cotton swabs or air dusters, to avoid the scratches on the tip of the connectors to receive and transmit the light without signal high loss in the links, always use the end caps when connectors are not in use.

Identifying the problem & location of the fault: - Hardware; - Physical Link 1. Visual Inspection on the equipment ports LED indicator on the port status. If ports LED indicators are not lighted. 2. Use loopback cable/connector to test the hardware TX & RX. 3. Check affected equipment and adjacent affected equipment GUI / CLI on the equipment port status of the RX & TX that is receiving and transmitting on the network devices for indicators on what could happen. 4. Conduct Tier2 (OTDR) tester & FiberInspector on the patch cords, cables and connectors for cable quality, use VFL to confirm the break point(if any) (Note, before performing OTDR, always ensure the fiber under test is isolated from the switches FO ports / SFP transceiver)

It is older or new that is no matter. The matter is which one are problem that should be slected frist after will be easy do your job.
