How can you test a new career path without committing full-time?

I have tried many career paths and failed at the end; mostly because of my deficiency in talents or gifts, but sometimes, it was a lack of intrinsic interests. It took me almost 30 years before I found my calling in psychology. Yes, it takes trial and error, and it depends what kind of opportunites are available. But ultimately, it depends on what life demands from you or what is God's calling for your life.

Exploring new career path well before you make your mind. Below are the 3 advice: 1. Pursue Internships 2. Pursue Short Term projects 3. Connect with similar professionals 4. Don't loose focus from present bread and butter:)

Job Shadowing and Informational Interviews are, to me, the best ways to learn about the day-to-day of the career you are checking out. When it comes to the actual work (as opposed to the particular enviroment or org culture of where you might end up) be sure to know what things/situations turn you off or demotivate you in any given work day and what things/situations excite and inspire you. Envision your ideal day at work and compare to the things that you find out while doing your research.

I recommend exploring opportunities within your current organization. You might consider asking your leader for a project that interests you, joining a committee, or covering someone's leave. Many people assume they need to look outside their organization to "test out" new career paths, but that's not always necessary!

Job crafting - Crafting your current role within the organisation into the one you wish to pursue step by step by adding new, more fulfilling tasks. Having the right support from your leader is critical here. My second favourite tip is have dialogues with people who work in jobs, industries or careers you wish to pursue to get more insights and clarity on opportunities, challenges as well as industry trends.

Part-time roles are particularly helpful to give you first hand experience with the type of work environment and customers you'd deal with. For example, if you dream of opening a cafe, working as a hostess will help you learn what it's really like to work in a restaurant.

Some key questions to ask about may be on things like: stakeholders what you own how success is measured where your role sits in the decision-making process where you'd spend your time what kind of impact you can drive what growth avenues are typical how your skills show up differently in that career and questions specific to the pain-points or things you don't like about your current role. Remember the person you're speaking with likely won't know what your current role is like, so set context and explain what you're hoping to move toward.

There are some opportunities that can be had with working with Consultants who might need some help with research or presentations that allows you to check out if the career path you are looking at is a good match.

Raise your hand and step out if your comfort zone to grow professionally. Align with a Mentor that you can shadow and learn from. Being a Protégé will allow you to immerse yourself into new areas and gain knowledge quickly. Ask for stretch assignments. Make it known that you want to challenge yourself. Make it known that you have more to offer. Make it known that you are willing and able to take on more. Create new projects or programs to benefit the organization. If no opportunities exist, create one. Use your innovation and creativity to bring a new project to life.
