While we move away from legacy systems into the new technology domains, the successful companies have put a key focus on training and upskilling the natives on those legacy systems who have the right attitude, learnability and the business knowledge. This is in combination with hiring lateral talents but at the same time ensuring that there is no disruption within the workforce or damage to the culture of the company. Have seen strong and growth companies failing after a leadership change or after an acquisition or merger. Incumbants and laterals should both feel valued for contributions.

What cannot be measured cannot be improved. Talent management need continuous improvement and hence continuous measurement is a key aspect. The measurement have to be on performance (actual) as well as potential ( forecasted). While an employee may be a super star in his current role, his/her ability to move further to the next level is or can be based on different KPIs. This is where the training, upskilling and resource management ( rotation and succession plans ) will become key. Further, while every team member has specific tasks to execute to accomplish an end goal, the team is ultimately the unit of measure that produces outcomes. It's vitally important to understand your team dynamics and and understand how an individual relates to the whole as well as their impact on the performance of the hole. Moving talent management to a team dynamic is also an important element.
