You can group them according to their level of proficiency in the language. This is so that it's easier for you to guide them if they are all of the same level. If you want, you could also form a mixed group. For example, 2 proficient ones, 2 average ones and 2 not so good ones. This is so that they can help each other.

Before starting the activity it will be good to lead the students to propose essential agreements for their team work. In this way they will be able to remember what is expected from them as a group but also as individuals.

How I usually initiate the group collaboration among my mentee/students is to instill their own self-confidence first. I basically rotate the centre of attention by particularly using each person in the group to demonstrate some activities or to voice up an opinion which there could be no right or wrong. This is important to increase the overall engagement. Rotating the centre of attention (and giving affirmations) makes everybody feel like every member is equal. However, if there is an obviously collaborative high performing member in the group, I somehow drive them to teach the other members and watch alongside them to correct if there is any mistake. Then I give the assigned task and usually they will automatically do it as a group.

This is to get a clear evaluation of their proficiency in writing. For summative evaluation, you could ask them to write essays. This is to see if they can incoperate the things that you taught them or not.

Consider students evaluating themselves on things they want to improve. 1. Identify what students want to improve in their writing and allow them to define it. If students say "fancy words", let them and over the course of the unit explain that the academic term is word choice, same for "adding details" explain that the academic term is storytelling. 2. Build in the time for students to review older and newer version of their writing and to see what has improved - if the criteria they wanted to improve have been met encourage them to look for other aspects that have improved (grammar, sentence structure, sequencing, setting, perspective, sensory details, etc.)

Something I’ve found to be rather effective in the evaluation stage, is when doing peer reviews to utilize a custom AI space to act as a guide during the peer review process. I create custom AI spaces that incorporates the rubric for my writing assignment, and it is instructed to act as a training module for my students. I will have students use this AI space to guide them through their first peer review. Once they understand the process of a peer review and what kinds of things to look for students will then continue the peer review process for other students. I’ve found their peer reviews to be more insightful and helpful in developing better writing after using the AI training module.

Since I started my journey with AI, the number one use case I keep coming back to is helping to give targeted feedback to my students in their writing. I started by programming Claude with my rubric and massive, detailed prompts to get it to read a pdf with all my students writings attached with all info removed. Too much work! Then I saw MagicSchool and Brisk could give feedback, but only one paper at a time. I then found class companion; this was much better but glitchy. SchoolAI is where I landed. Having the student be able to speak to a bit as they write is a much better approach than feedback rewrite, and it’s faster in their eyes. This is the journey I will continue to explore because writing is a paramount skill for all students.

It is important to teach the writing process and to have students model this process regularly. This will strengthen the value of collaborative work. Students will know how to ask the right questions and offer the right feedback.

It is important to help students enjoy writing! A big part of teaching writing in small groups is to help students write based on their capacity and where they are in a progression/phase. Consider letting your students choose their own topics and ideas so they could express more. Encourage them to illustrate with details to help build their writing pieces. Most of all, give them the opportunity to share their writing pieces to their peers so that there is accountability. Finally, I want to share that writing is linked with reading and many research could support this. So providing lots of opportunities for reading, as well as creating connections between reading and writing are very helpful to developing writers.
