How can you teach software engineering to prioritize testing and debugging?

It's hard to write a perfect code that can run on the first try. Debugging is a crucial part of IT in all disciplines. As a DevOps Engineer, I almost spend 70% time in testing and debugging. So it should be taught early in the programming classes. I will suggest, providing the bad code and fixing it as assignments will speed up the learning process.

Introducing testing and debugging early in software engineering education or project development is essential for fostering a mindset of quality and robustness. By incorporating these concepts from the beginning, learners and developers can understand their importance and integrate them seamlessly into their workflow. Here are some strategies to introduce testing and debugging early. Start by introducing the concepts of testing and debugging in the initial stages of the curriculum or project. Explain their significance in ensuring software reliability, stability, and maintainability. Integrate testing and debugging activities into regular coursework or project milestones.

Incorporate Testing and Debugging Throughout the Curriculum: Integrate testing and debugging exercises into various stages of the curriculum or project. From basic coding assignments to more complex projects, provide opportunities for students. Emphasize Test-Driven Development (TDD): Promote the practice of test-driven development (TDD) where tests are written before the actual code. This approach not only instills good testing habits but also emphasizes the iterative nature of software development. Highlight the Role of Testing in Design and Implementation: Illustrate how testing is not just about identifying errors but also plays a crucial role in guiding the design and implementation of software.

Inject in their minds at a very early stage that testing and debugging is as important as writing code. Improve your curriculum in such a way that after every programming topic, there must be a lecture/assignment on testing and debugging. In this way, they will start thinking that testing and debugging is a fundamental part of the process.

To ensure quality from the beginning, adopt TDD, write unit and automated tests, implement continuous integration, use debugging tools, perform code reviews, simulate errors, include performance tests and promote a quality culture within the team. These practices identify and fix problems early, resulting in more robust software.

I personally prefer VS Code coz of its extensive extensions and the functionalities that will really boost your productivity. These might really come in handy while debugging and automations!

IDEs like Visual Studio Code, IntelliJ IDEA, or PyCharm offer a range of features to aid in testing and debugging. These include syntax highlighting, code completion, integrated debugging tools, and test runners. By using an IDE with such features, students and developers can streamline their workflow and troubleshoot issues more effectively. Testing Frameworks: Introduce students to popular testing frameworks like JUnit for Java, PyTest for Python, Mocha for JavaScript, or NUnit for .NET. These frameworks provide a structured approach to writing and organizing tests, making it easier to automate the testing process and ensure comprehensive test coverage.

PyTest Framework : In my experience,Pytest is my trusted companion in the world of Python development! With its clean syntax and powerful features, Pytest simplifies testing and debugging, ensuring my code is robust and bug-free. ?? Special Features of Pytest: 1. Clean Syntax: Pytest's intuitive syntax allows me to write concise and readable tests, making it easy to express test cases and expectations. 2. So, when we use to study in the university, there were not much IDEs available at that time, but testing and debugging was already there. So we were taught debugging using gdb (GNU Debugger). Moreover, our professor printed out some sheets for us, in which we manually updated values of each variables on each line of code. So this was manual debugging. Fortunately, now things have improved very much. Show them during class intentionally that you are blocked somewhere and how debugging using a good IDE have pulled you out from blocker.

Applying best practices and standards in software development is crucial to ensuring consistency, quality and efficiency. This includes following coding guidelines, adopting design standards, performing code reviews, implementing tests, and maintaining documentation. By applying these practices, development teams can create software that is more robust, easier to maintain, and compatible with better industry standards.

Let's have a look on another aspect of encouraging quality culture a bit on a side of "forcing" it. There are many technical ways of forcing quality culture on the project like introducing linters for the code which can apply Coding Standart rules automatically. Also in a couple with such tools repository configuration should be changed not to allow merging code which was not able to pass automatic quality gates. Apart from that it also very good practice to run unit and integration tests on the code which spoused to be merged. All this configurations should be configured in the way to avoid overriding them and applying changes whith out green light.

Establishing a baseline for quality standards helps learners or team members understand the importance of testing and debugging in meeting these expectations. To encourage a culture of quality in software development, establish coding standards, promote code reviews, automate testing, prioritize documentation, establish quality metrics, promote open communication, invest in training, encourage shared responsibility, celebrate achievements of quality and seek continuous learning. I believe requiring Test-Driven Development in school where students write tests before they write the code to implement functionality is very important. This approach not only emphasizes testing but also ensures that the student is fully thinking about use cases before writing code. This ensures the code written wont be wasted if the idea wasn't full thought through.

We have to change our mindset and increase the priority of testing and debugging in our minds. Then practice again and again and improve.
