How can you teach automotive engineering effectively to students or trainees?

I am really passionate about recruiting the fresh and young talent passing out from the university. In addition to the energy they possess they are much better informed than highly experienced individuals in the industry. Particularly this generation has extraordinarily open mind to accept the challenges and also trying all possibilities of explorations. Industry should encourage this as much as possible.

In my experience It will be a good opportunity to freshers (trainees and students) to understand practically on functioning and working principles of aggregates and components from OEM. Apart from product knowledge it would be also good to hone skills of freshers (trainees and students) with analysis on aggregate / component failures using fish bone analysis using Cause, Concern, Corrective action. With OEM active engagement and a defined curriculum with final year automobile engineering college students or trainees, it enables OEM to “Catch them young” to know product features and increase brand awareness.

Effective automotive engineering instruction begins with understanding your students. Recognize their backgrounds and prior knowledge. Start with pre-assessment quizzes to gauge their understanding. Cater to diverse learning styles: some may prefer hands-on experiments, while others benefit from lectures or visual aids. Adjust the pace based on their grasp of topics; don't rush complex concepts. It is necessary to start by induction process into the field, for students to have a good appreciation of what lies ahead in the training. Highlighting the good side and the bad side of things is also important so that they know what to expect. Learning by doing is best provided the introduction has been done properly.

Hands on practice. In the field of automotive engineering, practical experience is essential. Provide well-equipped workshops or labs where students can work with actual automobiles, engines, and parts. Give students the chance to learn by doing by breaking down and reassembling engines, identifying and fixing automotive systems, and running experiments.

I do believe in the Blended Approach. Example: It's hard to picture what a datum point is, let alone how it is made, checked for quality, and then checked for the quality in relation to the other datum points to see if they are correct. That was the hardest lesson I had to learn book-wise and hands-on. At some point, if there was an area where it could be set up like a Technical College is set up. A lot of things I would still be working to learn. These days if you want to stay in competition you have to find a way to make it easy to apply the educational part while having a way to have a hands on example to work with.

Joint development programs between OEM and college institutions can be a good start to bring structure to the practical knowledge development for young college graduates.

As always feedback is important and a good governance should be built around when and how the feedback is given . Regularly sharing feedback can be essential to do course correction if required.

Exposure to the ongoing trends in technology should be ingrained into the curriculum. Industrial visits are a good way to do this on a monthly basis to different segments .

Today's dynamic environment needs real focused people, hence it is imperative the fresher have a good perspective of the industry hence to have best connection a practical orientation is very crucial. This can be achieved by a collaborative methodology between industry and the institutes/ colleges. Further more utilising interns and GETs for actual on job working will help new comers get first hand knowledge about the industry.bsometimensit is seens interns and GETs are given more of documentation and mundane jobs.

I give inter relationship of basics of engineering what is learned and how it is used in the actual vehicle design, measurements, analysis. This helps people to think and use the knowledge effectively.

GEMBA - go see automotive assembly plants (plural). Go see ones in the US, Europe, Mexico and Asia. Go see internal combustion engines and battety electric motors, transmissions, axles, etc. being made. Go see them all torn down as well. Nearly every OEM has a tear-down facility or contract that to the many teardown companies. Go to the dealerships (plural), yours and your competitors. Watch the vehicles being repaired. Talk to the workers who assemble the parts and vehicles. Talk to the workers who teardown the vehicles. Talk to the workers who repair the vehicles. You will learn more from these activities then any automotive engineering class.

In my experience working in an automotive company in the QA Dept with Engineering. All had some contributions. The best I had was learning by hands on and then defined book part at the same time made it easier to comprehend. So what I didn’t pick up on quickly the actual hands on was easier to show what part I didn’t understand. That doesn’t go for everything. I have seen an online college that teaches Mechanical Engineering with a type of computer based hands on. It reminds me of what CAD was like to the Engineers when it first came out. (To my knowledge). Industrial/Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineering and Automotive Engineers. I’m not a Professional Top Voice or CEO. I’m someone that learned by doing. That made the book part easier.
