How can you take creative risks without fear of failure?

Risk is an opportunity !! Break all problems into smaller bits and pieces, you will be surprised they are much easier to solve

Don’t go alone. Go together. Courage travels in packs and courage is contagious. If you can find peers who can help you take risk together or support you in your pursuit, your courage can shine.

We never know unless we are willing to endeavour to try. Every action, pursuit, or project comes with consequences whether it be good or bad and we mustn’t let fear govern our choices. Failure is such a powerful word and I encourage everyone to challenge that “unknown” as it truly isn’t failure if we have learned from it and have grown more knowledgeable.

There is no guaranteed way to take creative risks without the possibility of failure. However, one approach is to set achievable goals and acknowledge that failures or setbacks are part of the learning process. Additionally, seeking feedback from others and learning from successful examples can help minimize risks.

Each time you look at fear as a challenge to be overcome you are growing. Each time you find a way to overcome that challenge, you grow more confident. Life and business are always going to throw you curveballs and surprises. It’s all about how you decide in your mind that you will rise to accept and embrace the challenge. You will find a way to overcome. You will make a way where there seemingly is no way. And as you do, you will grow stronger and stronger with each step you take

Taking creative risks is not about avoiding failure. In fact, failure is part of the territory. The point is to learn, to push boundaries, and to innovate. The key is to manage the risk or the impact of failure. A mantra I try to follow is "fail small, learn big". If you allow for failure and compartmentalize the potential to impact budget, or disrupt customers or your brand then you can experiment in a contained way. If your idea succeeds, you can scale up. If your idea has issues, you can adjust or abandon the idea without significant disruption.

Gut feelings matter. But if you want others to trust your gut, it is helpful to support your feelings with data. If you can, that's a powerful combination. Data by itself is also great, but if it matches your intuition, you will naturally convey a more motivational demeanor when communicating about risks and issues.

Conducting thorough research before taking creative risks is indeed pivotal. However, it's essential to balance research with action. Over-reliance on data can potentially paralyze creativity and lead to analysis paralysis. Sometimes, "gut feeling" derived from experience can serve as a meaningful guide alongside hard data.

Taking risks despite the fear of failure can be challenging but rewarding. Research plays a crucial role in mitigating this fear. When you thoroughly research a potential risk, you gain knowledge and insights that reduce uncertainty. This knowledge empowers you to make informed decisions, develop contingency plans, and identify potential pitfalls. It transforms the fear of failure into a calculated risk, increasing your confidence in the outcome. Research provides a safety net, allowing you to explore new opportunities while minimizing the likelihood of catastrophic failure, making risk-taking a more manageable and growth-oriented process. Nothing in life is guaranteed. Every winner was once a loser who simply refused to give up.

There is no alternative to research. Accepted that we are bound to make some creative decisions on gut feeling but options we consider can be developed through research. This can eliminate the chances of major mistakes and failure.

If you want to call yourself a true thought leader, you can’t be afraid of failure. It’s very likely that you are going to put content out that may not be everyone’s cup of tea. As a consequence, it is important to develop some thick skin, so that any criticism that you may receive can be taken, without becoming something that discourages you from continuing to contribute to the betterment of your field.

She says growing up her father used to ask her at the dinner table, "What did you fail at today?" Institute a new Key Performance Indicator for yourself: How many times did you fail today, this week, this month. Chase the number of failures, as it will be a good indication of the number of successes you get.

Start Small: Begin with low-stakes experiments. These small-scale ventures allow you to test ideas without excessive risk. Learn from Failure: Treat failure as a valuable lesson. Analyze what went wrong, adjust, and apply those lessons to future endeavors. Feedback Loop: Foster a culture of constructive feedback. Encourage team members to share insights and suggestions to enhance your experiments.

Experiment and iterate are the most needed. There is no failure in this journey. Remember the quote, "Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless." Thomas Edison

Those who succeed more often tried more than others. The practical reality is that seldom folks succeed at the first try on anything new. Success improves with attempts that improves upon previous tries. Iteration also means to change things from the previous try in an attempt to improve. Not to do the same thing all over again for that will be known as insanity!

Someone once said you are only as good as your network. That’s why it’s important to cultivate relationships with people who can help you. Help comes in many forms, and sometimes from where you least expect it. Your network is not just the people at your company or the people in your industry. The best networkers have a mindset for cataloging everyone they interact with. Plus, the best way to get value from someone is to give value to them first.

Finding a supportive community allows creativity to shine. When the people around you support you as a human AND as a professional, they won't judge you for thinking outside the box. When in doubt, go together. Two minds are better than one, and sometimes it takes another person to get the creative juices flowing (or the confidence to share your creativity with the world).

Collaborative effort and seeking mentorship are great ways to ease the fear of risk taking and view failure as an integral part of the creative process.

Your followers and connections are possible collaborators. Be open to that possibility. Explore it further with people that strike you as like-minded. Do a small project together. No money involved. Not taking much of your time. Test the waters and see where that goes.

Yes! An important skill to hone is influence. How to bring others with you, not through compliance but rather commitment. This provides you with support but also provides career opportunities to others.

There is no failure here :-). Celebrate every result. Focus on the efforts and accept the results. Sometimes, the results make it obvious that your vision needs adjustments, so be ready to do it. I speak to my clients about celebrating all the time. Before we can celebrate failures, we have to learn to celebrate successes. Many high-achieving women gloss over small accomplishments and may (or may not) take the time to celebrate and internalize their wins. I encourage them to find ways to pause and acknowledge their wins. Because not celebrating leads to feelings of exhaustion and lack of meaning and fulfillment

Success Reflection: When an experiment succeeds, dissect what went wrong. Understand the factors contributing to success to replicate them. Failure as Growth: Don't shy away from acknowledging failures. Celebrate them as opportunities for growth and learning. Share Stories: Share both success and failure stories within your team. This open dialogue removes the stigma around failure and fosters a culture of innovation.

Curiosity is key for moving forward, especially in unchartered waters. Curiosity also mitigates defensiveness and opens up space to receive feedback and learn for next time. Curiosity enables us to lean in in Adult mode and be receptive and harness a growth mindset perspective.

A growth mindset is essential to positioning yourself as a Thought Leader. Your audience will expect you to evolve and develop your perspectives over time, and that involves listening to feedback, incorporating new external perspectives and questioning your own. If your mindset is fixed you see failure as a constant fear that must be avoided at all costs, not an opportunity to grow. This leads to your platform as a thought leader becoming ever smaller as you "defend" the status quo, rather than looking at every failure as a chance to test new ideas and frame new perspectives.

When we turn doubt into motivation, we can safeguard our goals and battle the ever-increasing judgemental and often ill-informed naysayers. I'm a data geek so I like to do my research and have evidence to back up what I believe. Very happy to engage in thought-provoking conversations as long as respect is maintained. Cultivating a growth mindset has become a given in my squiggly career, as meaningful reflection is bound to lead to the lessons learnt in every opportunity and experience I've been blessed with. One thing I would say is to stop using words like “failure” when working in a creative environment. There really is no such thing. Every avenue explored is one that needed to be to either rule it out or spark something that is truly unique and special.

How can you take creative risks without fear of failure? FAIL! Something I try to instill in each of the incredibly talented human beings I have the honor to advise, mentor & partner with. What does F.A.I.L. mean? FAIL is an acronym for First (or Fifth) Attempt In Learning. If you are learning EACH time you FALL, and you get back up after EACH time you DO, you ALWAYS win. F.A.I.L = WIN. By understanding that you never lose; you either win or you learn - and you always learn - and remembering that through every single thing you go through…and know that there is positive that comes from all of it - you're always going to win. So YES! FAIL, FORWARD. Fail, ON. LEARN. Keep DRIVING. Keep CREATING. Keep BELIEVING! And you'll win EVERY time.

We are taught at a very early age that failing is bad and it’s something that we should hide and/or be ashamed of. In the U.S., our education system has long been rooted in pass/fail. And yet some of the world’s brightest minds fail(ed) often and made incredible discoveries and inventions. We have to create environments where “failure” is expected and even promoted in order to get to the “good stuff”. Curiosity, continuous learning and improvement are really what it’s about.

The most important thing for me is to remind myself of where (and how) I have succeeded in the past. If I am facing an opportunity to take a risk, I read the sticky notes along the edges of my monitor where I have posted several successes. This puts the risk into perspective (maybe it's not so radical after all) and reminds me that I have what it takes to do hard risky things.

"Risk" is a term we use to describe any situation with an uncertain outcome, be it in finance, health, or personal decisions. The implications can be tangible, like financial loss, or intangible, like reputational damage. On the other hand, "creative risk" specifically refers to uncertainties in realms of artistic endeavors, innovation, and new ideas. It's about taking chances in areas where creativity is pivotal. The primary challenge here lies in gauging subjective reactions: Will an audience appreciate a groundbreaking movie plot? Will consumers be receptive to a novel product design? In essence, while all creative risks fall under the broader umbrella of risks, the specificities of their context and implications set them apart.

You can never take creative risks without a fear of failure; it's an important part of the process. Most people instinctively fear creativity because it involves too much uncertainty, and we're primed to avoid it whenever possible. But that fear of failure will drive you to ensure your creativity has the best possible chance for success. You'll put as much energy into your creative idea as possible because your neck's on the line. I see it as a feature, not a bug, of the creativity system. But what's vital is that when you do fail (and you will at some point), you see it as a learning process to make your creativity better, not a validation of the fear itself. That takes a big mindset adjustment.
