As a student attending business networking events, it's important and essential to identify your specific goals. It will not be the same if you are trying to find a mentor for your startup than if you are looking for a corporate job.

After years of active networking, I've learned the importance of refining your pitch. In social events, engaging with people often leads to lengthy explanations about what they do, leaving us still uncertain after five minutes. It's crucial not to overwhelm with all your services and add-ons at once. Perfecting your pitch and tailoring it to the person you're talking to is key. Even if they don't require your services, they might know someone who does.

It is very important to develop a brief and compelling elevator pitch that introduces you, your academic background, and your career aspirations. Keep it concise yet informative, making it easy for others to understand your goals and how they might assist you.

Please don't prepare a pitch. Be yourself. Learn how to explain what you do, or want to do, in a couple of simple sentences. That's not a pitch, it's cutting out the unnecessary waffle and preparing you with something to say. Other than that, just be yourself.

One thing that I've found helpful: The 45 second rule for your short-version elevator pitch. If you don't have this in place, better don't even go out for Networking. You might hurt your cause. But if you have this pitch well prepared, doors will open.

Its important and essential to select your attire that reflects the industry you are interested in. Dressing professionally not only makes a positive impression but also shows that you understand and respect industry norms. Aim to blend in with the professionals while maintaining your personal style.

I believe that one's attire reflects their feelings. Throughout my extensive experience in networking, I have rarely appeared without wearing business attire. First impressions are enduring, and dressing appropriately contributes significantly to making a positive impact.

Well, I would be a little bolder in my advise: At concious moments of networking, go for POWER DRESSING! Not too much of course, but you want to be remembered. Think about it: Important people will be approached by many others. It might be beneficial to find your edge in business fashion. What you wear can make a difference.

It's not exclusively about you. At times, it's about the value you can provide to others or the connections you can facilitate for them. The key lies in being a good listener, focusing on understanding the wants and needs of the other person. Assess if there's someone within your network who could offer assistance. After extending a helping hand, the question arises: why wouldn't they choose to engage with you? It's fundamentally about a reciprocal exchange of support and collaboration.

Approach individuals or groups with confidence. Offer a firm handshake, make eye contact , actively listen and introduce yourself with enthusiasm. Confidence in your approach conveys a positive first impression and sets the tone for meaningful conversations.

It is important to invest in professional business cards that include your name, contact information, and a brief summary of your academic and professional background. Handing out business cards is a professional way to exchange contact information and facilitates seamless follow-up.

Connect with professionals on professional networking platforms like LinkedIn. Include a personalized message referencing your meeting at the event. This digital connection strengthens your professional network and provides an ongoing channel for communication and engagement.

As a student diving into the world of business networking, think of each event as your personal treasure hunt. You're not just collecting contacts; you're gathering golden opportunities to learn, grow, and set the stage for your future career. The real magic, though, happens after the event. Strike while the iron is hot! Within 24 hours, reach out with a message that's as memorable as your first impression. Remind them of that spark in your conversation, the laughs shared, or the common ground discovered. Be genuine in your appreciation and keen on continuing the dialogue. Suggest a coffee chat to pick their brain, or swap an interesting article related to your chat.

In addition to sending a personal note after the networking event, send a follow-up note 2-3 weeks after that either circles back on a conversation you had or shares progress of a commitment you made. Doing so will set you apart from the event and show your dedication to the industry or topic. Continue to stay in touch 2-3 times per year to deepen the relationship by asking for help and offering assistance in whichever ways you can: volunteer, invite them to an event they may be interested in, share news that are relevant. Consistent and timely communication will do more for you than sending a generic thank you note.

It's a smart strategy to establish connections with both organizers and attendees. Being in such a role not only allows you to become a familiar face but also offers the opportunity to demonstrate your initiative and commitment. The experience of interacting with a diverse group of professionals provides invaluable insights and can lay the foundation for enduring professional relationships.

Especially in early days of your career, your network is your CURRENCY. You might not have the experience and expertise yet to solve someone's problem, but you might know someone who can! This makes you relevant and if you play it smartly, you can be part of the project/solution/etc. and learn a lot.

Learn from the leaders and participants what the real profile of the market is, beyond what is taught in school. Build your image which will be a testament to your character as people see you more and understand you better.

The fact that around 80% of jobs are filled through networking, it is imperative that students incorporate networking into their daily activities. Someday, universities will understand the true value of business networking and it will be taught in schools.
