How can you successfully transition into a Recruiting career?

Like myself, and the majority of the recruiting community, you don't grow up wanting to be a recruiter. It's an easy field to get into, but a very hard one to succeed in and be unique, for many reasons. Recruiters are empathetic, resourceful and detail-oriented human beings. They're great at Marketing and Sales, and they're very good at active listening (most of them), and on top of all, they're people-centric.

I do not hold a bachelor's or master's degree in business management, and I transitioned to a Recruiting career 5 years ago. The best strategy to the transition is to understand the skills required for the job. Analytical skill helps you understand the job and sales skill helps you master the job. One should be able to sell the company and job to the Talent and should be able to sell the Talent to the hiring manager.

Based on my experience, transitioning into a recruiting career requires a deliberate strategy. Start by acquiring foundational knowledge through courses or certifications in human resources and recruitment. Building a professional network within the industry can offer valuable insights and opportunities. Consider internships or entry-level positions to gain practical experience and exposure to recruitment processes. Develop strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively connect with candidates and clients. Staying updated with industry trends and technologies is crucial for success.

Become acutely aware that recruitment is B2B sales. You will spend a minimum of 50% of your time cold calling and attempting to sell recruitment services to companies. If cold sales isn't for you, neither is recruitment. Long term it gets better, and you can build a personal brand - but to get your heels dug in, it's gonna be rough, buckle up for the ride. Once you've come realise this, you're now considered a safe investment for companies to bring you in and invest in you. Good luck.

Consider obtaining training or certifications in recruiting, although they might not be mandatory for entry-level positions. Look for opportunities to gain experience, whether through internships, volunteer work, or entry-level HR roles. Networking within the industry can also be beneficial. Tailor your resume to highlight any relevant experience, and familiarize yourself with recruiting tools and interviewing techniques. Apply for entry-level recruiting positions and maintain enthusiasm while continuously learning and staying updated on industry trends.

Hier k?nnen Kolleg:innen zwar unterstützen (z.B. Telefonleitfaden), aber das richtige Handling kommt nur über die übung.

A few ATS providers have courses you can take to become a certified user (i.e. Workday). Becoming familiar with how an ATS (and a CRM for that matter). LinkedIn also provides many instructional videos via their LinkedIn Learning on many topics ranging from DEI recruiting to sourcing. Above all else though, expand your network with proven recruiters from different industries. Find out what makes them successful and where they learned what they know. Follow that path and evolve.

To delve into the recruiting field, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with its fundamentals. Explore the recruitment process, tools, metrics, and best practices via various online resources—blogs, podcasts, webinars, courses, and books are valuable starting points. Engaging in online communities and forums allows networking with other recruiters, seeking advice, and gaining feedback. Following industry leaders on social media provides insight into the latest trends, news, and expertise in recruiting, aiding in staying informed and updated.

De mon humble avis, j’estime qu’avant de se lancer dans une carrière de recruteur il faudrait apprendre les connaissances de bases de ce métier et avoir certains skills qui sont indispensables.Toutefois, n’est pas recruteur qui veut! La pratique par contre est pour moi le meilleur moyen d’y parvenir. On se trompe, on recommence! On devient plus à l’aise au fur et à mesure. C’est du donnant -donnant, on cherche de se vendre mutuellement ( candidat et recruteur).

Recruiting is sales. One must be able to sell a job to a candidate, and be able to do so flawlessly, so a candidate leaves the interview wanting to work for the company. Though there are many ways to be a successful recruiter, hands-on experience, I have found, is some of the most impactful ways for someone to learn how to “sell” a position to a candidate. That may include job-shadowing, completing mock interviews, being able to learn the “do’s and don’t’s” during an interview, but most importantly, it’s gaining the feedback from others in the industry on how to best represent the position in which you are recruiting for.

I agree, however, learning and have a clear mentorship first gives you the upper hand. The best location to understand different industries and experiment yourself as a recruiter is an agency.

To transition into a recruiting career, gain hands-on experience by networking, interning, or volunteering in HR or recruitment roles. Familiarize yourself with applicant tracking systems, understand recruitment processes, and develop strong communication skills. Stay updated on industry trends and regulations. Showcase your passion for connecting talent with opportunities on your resume and LinkedIn profile. Seek mentorship and consider obtaining relevant certifications. Try to gain hands on experience. Assist with hiring someone on your team. Shadow recruiters at your company. Recruit volunteers for non-profits.

It’s extremely important to have a clear messaging and a very complete profile in LinkedIn. It’s also your business card, candidates search for connection through there, so having a good photo, professional information from you and a touch of who you are besides work, can guarantee a better personal branding development.

Der Job als Recruiter:in besteht schlie?lich aus vielen Telefonaten und Kontakt zu Menschen. Jemand der telefonisch nicht überzeugt, wird direkt aussortiert.

Now, step #5 is tricky. I had been applying for recruiting jobs for 8 months before I even received a call. I has a few backup positions to apply to as well... which I ended up rejecting. Some companies are looking for experienced recruiters and while it might not be fair for Jr. roles it's just the way it is. Because training = money. Keep sending and trying. Make an alert on your email per keyword. Start the premium trial (that thing helps) and apply the moment job ads are posted. Pe persistent and don't give up. Add recruiters to your network, and don't be shy to message them directly and see if they have a job for you. People overlook, they miss out, but that can't miss out on you if you stand out.

Research the company, its culture, and its hiring needs to demonstrate your knowledge and enthusiasm during interviews. Practice answering common recruiting interview questions, such as how you would handle difficult candidates or prioritize competing tasks. Showcase your communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and passion for connecting people with opportunities to succeed in the recruiting profession.

You need to focus on these transferable skills. Give relevant examples of times when you managed projects, met deadlines, influenced others to make a decision or you were an advocate for your company/ client. These skills are transferable between industries and are the bread and butter of Recruiters.

In the interview you will also need to show that you can stay on target, accept setbacks and continue onwards as well as be able to hit or exceed targets. Show how you can network whilst also being able to listen to the job brief.

In my experience, a great recruiter needs just three basic skills/behaviours... so you should consider this before joining the profession. 1, You need a resilience and strength of character, because there's a great deal of rejection and things go wrong. 2, You need to take pleasure in helping people to achieve their goals. 3, You need great listening skills and an ability to connect dots, where they may not exist... Recruitment is a tough, but incredibly rewarding career. strength of character and a real drive, will mean that you can be successful.

Now is the most difficult time in 15 years to be a healthcare IT recruiter. Hospitals are broke. It will turn around next year as the covid budget hangover wears off and projects ramp up. Best of luck to everyone struggling out there. It’s best to have multiple trades and skill sets. Always be ready and always stay positive!

Some helpful things that I think are worth remembering as you enter recruiting. -Listen to understand, not respond -Pauses conversations are OK, not awkward -Understand and screen the person, not the resume -Pick up the phone and dial, don’t rely on a piece of electronic paper to qualify someone Background in HR/Business etc… in the wrong mindset can hurt a new recruiter. Work long hours Take advice from seasoned recruiters but don’t make it your bible. Go in like a lion and set new standards. Be yourself, not being a recruiter in your mind, will make you the best recruiter.

Networking is vital. Connect with professionals in the field through LinkedIn, industry events, and professional associations. Seek a mentor who can provide guidance and insights about the industry.

Get a really difficult sales job, door2door/B2C cold calling. Stick that out for 6 months, learn to sell/objection handle/accept rejection. Once you've done that - any recruitment firm will hire you, guaranteed.
