While all this is also really important - it has to be the right time in your progress. Make sure you have recent things to speak to. If you do a really great job on something - utilise this and 'strike while the iron is hot'. If there are issues with budget etc. you can set a time for it to be reviewed, or ask for the raise to happen in the future - but speaking at a time where you have really impacted the business is important. Also don't let these things hold you back for your own worth - if you need the raise, and ask with a strong business case and they can't offer it, or any timeline - are they trying hard enough to keep you?

The main thing to speak to here as well is cost savings and budgets for the company. Also look at the scale of the project - is it what was initially proposed, or are you now doing lots more work. You need to have real reasons and proof to back up your request - don't rely on "at such and such company I would be getting..." or "the average salary according to this survey is..." - make it personal.

Asking for a raise shows ambition, and drive. Great qualities for an employee in a successful company. BE realistic, but don't be unafraid - the worst they can say is no, and you just need to know in your mind what that means. If they say no, are you okay with the salary? If you've taken on additional work, do you need to draw the line, and ask for your job description to be reviewed by those asking you to do tasks outside of this? Also think about the progress of the project, how much further you have to go.
