How can you successfully implement a mentorship program for women in workplace safety?

It is important to create mentoring programs for women in the workplace. However, we should not forget that we are doing this for the sake of balance. Because in some cases, as a result of highlighting women under the name of positive discrimination, men may not be given enough attention and support.

The mentorship programme should be defined with clear goals, aimed at increasing gender diversity, career advancement, leadership skills, or addressing specific challenges faced by women in that particular ganization. It should also seek leadership support to secure resources and promote participation.

A good place to start a woman safety mentorship program would be through any business existing training program - either Graduate Development or Apprenticeship where females are selected to undergo training in a particular area over several years. Using the traineeship program as the pathway those involved (Males/Females) would become key stakeholders in the workplace to oversee the OHS development of these females through a well-supported mentorship program covering all aspects of OHS that is well-supported by business leaders/management.

For the mentorship the most important factor I think is the clarity of goals and objectives. What u want to see in ur mentees, u clearly define then derive ur objectives and goals for the line of actions for whole mentorship program. Definitely there will be reviews at interval to monitor the effectiveness of program.

Appoint an empowered director to oversee the implementation of such Policy pertain to Personal Safety & Health, Well-being, Data Protection & Confidentiality, including a Grievance procedure. Clear & precise essential information shared during every onboarding of new staffs. Every department shall have such a representative reporting of implementation to the director oversighting. An Independent Investigation Committee or Panel shall be formed where they should be fair, just, ethical and with empathy. Bi-annual review for continual improvement.

It's been said a million times that if is not documented then it never happened, in this case, if it isn't evaluated nor measured then how can we ascertain a program's success? Implementing a program is one thing, monitoring and gauging it's progress and success defines it's value. Regular evaluation of people, program and skills gives them the chance to find gaps and deploy measures to address and further develop.

Just one general comment about this topic. The biggest issue I've encountered in my short life is no one wants to mentor someone else so well, they get passed up by the mentee. As a leader in the Armed Forces, that was exactly what I wanted. If they pass me, I've trained them to move forward amd work hard. Make sure you assign mentors who don't have an ego.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this is no different than asking how you implement mentorship for black people. Weird and uncomfortable, right? An effective mentorship program should be blind to race, gender, and age. Once you separate any of these, the focus becomes, in this case, gender, and not safety. As a leader you don't separate, you build. Show the group what to build, allow them to build it, and only get involved as needed. The result is the goal, not the differences. This said I have worked with great Woman in the Safety Community, but never once did their gender ever come to attention, I guess that is the best way to explain this. Just wasn't there. My2cents
