The research goals need to be concrete enough to create direction, tasks, and lucrative deliverables for different parties to participate in the projects. Yet, there needs to be enough space in the research methodology to be agile if required. It's important to utilize enough time when planning the project to ensure that the work packages (WPs) or overall research plan has a very strong logical framework and that each WP contributes to overall goals. The workload needs to be planned fairly otherwise the work is not motivating. There needs to be a good mechanism or methodology to bring new partners along the way. This is needed to keep the direction and make sure the goals will be addressed.

2 Balance flexibility and accountability

The second step to creating a research contract that supports innovation and collaboration is to balance flexibility and accountability. This means allowing enough room for creativity, experimentation, and adaptation, while still defining the roles, responsibilities, and deliverables of each party. A communication plan and ambitious implementation of this is in a crucial role. The most common challenge is that stakeholders and participants feel not being heard or have too little information. Securing a good information flow has an important role in securing good and responsive decision-making at all levels of the project, not centralizing this to the PI or a few in the utmost lead. The flow of information is a collaborative effort, it can be secured by planning but it's also everybody's responsibility and creates a sense of belonging to a community. Commitment and attitude towards the achievement of clear goals feed into accountability and a culture of open communication. This stems from clear project and contract planning.

3 Incorporate feedback and learning

The third step to creating a research contract that supports innovation and collaboration is to incorporate feedback and learning. This means setting up regular and constructive reviews of the progress, performance, and impact of the research project, and using the results to inform and improve the next steps.
