In my experience, clients trust us because they believe we bring the innovations that are relevant for their context. This contextualization is critical and staying up to date on digital transformation and innovation trends can't be a one off activity. This has to be embedded in day to day operating model leveraging all aspects such as: - Subscriptions to reputable publications - Social media - Pro-active in-house research on relevant topics in focus industry - Joining relevant industry event, - 1-1 networking with thought leaders.

In my experience networking with vendors, startups owners, consultants, and peers working at IT firms about upcoming products, tools, and methodologies they see gaining traction has helped me in staying up to date. Networking, talking to thought leaders and just staying connected with the ecosystem is vital to stay updated with recent trends, including innovation trends. Besides, one underrated quality to adopt in this entire process is the ability to LISTEN and comprehend. Many people possess several experiences and just by listening effectively, one can gain abundant insight and knowledge.

To remain at the forefront of digital transformation and innovation, professionals must adopt a multifaceted approach. Engaging with reputable industry publications, attending tech conferences, and participating in online learning platforms provide up-to-date insights. Following thought leaders, exploring research reports, and collaborating with startups offer valuable perspectives. Besides the overall big picture on digital transformation, important to identify components (or sub-area) of digital transformation process that you will focus strongly on for say 6-12 months atleast. Once the area is identified, build a plan to: 1. Learn through a formal course the concepts deeply for that sub-area. (DEEP) 2. Apply the learnings to filter the information available from the various sources identified in this article and park away other interesting information that does not fall in the sub-area (FOCUS). 3. Think and write something about the sub-area 4. Get an assignment in that sub-area or make it known to all in your network your desire to do so and attract the right assignment. Rinse and repeat for next sub-area.

Firstly, as a consultant working with SME business owners helping them to start and/or manage, grow and scale a VALUABLE business, it is important to have a clear understanding of what digital transformation is and is not especially because of all the voices providing opinions on the concept. You must be able to clearly explain what digital transformation is and the benefits thereof to a client. If you cannot, then you do not have a clear understanding of the concept. And secondly, utilise a digital transformation framework - a visual that easily explains the concept and journey of digital transformation - to explain the concept to SME business owners and which can be used to evaluate the as-is and to-be digital landscape for the business.

As ever whilst a broad knowledge of trends and developments is useful acquiring an in-depth knowledge of the areas in which you are focused is critical to delivering client value. Our problem is that whilst "digital transformation" is a business-related term in reality it is composed of many different technological areas and commercial offers within those areas. So decide in which areas of digital transformation you are going to deliver client value and focus all of your activities on becoming a "go-to" person in that area. Then as a consultant, you can deliver on interpreting the technical complexities of the subject in the context of your client's industry and the benefits to their operations.
