I'll try to summarize a few things to stay relevant in GIS, in my experience: - Interest is the main deriving factor of keeping you relevant to any field. By far, this has been the most important factor to me personally. - Continuous learning keeps you up-to-date with the latest happenings and technology evolutions in the industry - Hands-on practice is another important factor that makes you feel on the track - Getting involved in the community by attending webinars or, more importantly, conferences - Following the start-of-the-art in GIS and earth observation through platforms like LinkedIn

Learn, specialize, network, embrace open source, and keep up with tech trends. By following these strategies, you can stay relevant and competitive in the GIS industry and adapt to the evolving demands of this dynamic field.

This knowledge is documented through the use of both traditional and cutting-edge geospatial technologies. To be relevant in GIS, you need to keep thinking about how place and time influence everything. That's all we ve got. No matter how computer advancement will push GIS technology, we should never forget how place and time makes the difference.

As other contributors say data skills and continual learning are really important but what in my opinion because more and more important is also to link the data questions to the impact the data has on policies. If as GIS-professionals you can expand in making more impact with data and changing the policies with great analysis and dashboards or online maps you will have more impact!

Keep update with skills on how to make quality spatial data and put it in a high priority to the clients/users. Several main components of spatial data quality were identified by international standardization bodies which consist of 7 usual quality elements: lineage, positional accuracy, attribute accuracy, semantic accuracy, temporal accuracy, logical consistency and completeness. To reduce spatial data inconsistency and provide users with data of adequate quality, the specification of spatial data consistency requirements should be explicitly described. Data producers can follow the defined data consistency requirements to validate how well a geospatial dataset meets the criteria set and produces desirable geospatial data.

This is the closest I have seen to my own viewpoint. GIS can be applied to almost everything from sports such as basketball (mapping shots), to crime data to transportation models. There are plenty of tools out there. The real key is asking the right questions and figuring out the best way to illustrate it which is something AI can't do. Only after that do you look for the right tool or platform. It seems that many people think staying relevant means chasing the next shiny new thing. What about mastering what is already out there and finding new ways to use it and improve it.

There are websites like Site123 and Squarespace you could use to make a portfolio for free (it will cost you to make a personal domain though). You can use any past projects from college, past jobs (with consent), and/or personal projects to help make a portfolio that represents your interests and GIS capabilities.

One key to staying relevant is by regularly following the GIS professional community. This can be the software companies (i.e. ESRI), certain high profile professionals, or even your local GIS groups. Check out what others are doing with GIS. Listen to the questions that they are still asking. See how your skills can contribute. In some cases, this may require you to upskill.
