The power could go out, you get an error message you've never seen before, and someone runs into the table and knocks your machine over shattering it into a thousand pieces. While this probably won't happen there's always a chance that it will. So, what will you do if that's the case? In a field where you rely on often unreliable technology, redundancy can be the difference between making a deadline or not. Have a printer ready to go on a UPS, in a different room, or your local maker space or library with printers. It pays to have options.

Avoiding failure of a long and large print run can be avoided by testing assumptions or fitments on sub-sets of parts befor ecommitting to the larger parts. Explore process limitations as well. FDM is great for tough mid scale and large parts, but not for very small parts. Metal printing is great, but very costly and time consuming. If a part is damaged during secondary operations then more time than just print time is lost. Also your machines can be running the longer printing operations while you are working the more time consuming secondary operations.

Reading all the process logs and the calibration of process monitoring devices in the system along with consulting the seniors to find the pattern of previous failures and the possible remedies is always the best way to educate ourselves regarding the various process related challenges.

I'd say treat it like cooking. Almost everyone I know listens to music or a podcast while cooking. By and large, the act of observing a 3d printer print a job is a passive process; might as well make it fun while you're monitoring. Along the same lines, wherever possible, account for failed/partial jobs into your time buffer. If that's absolutely not possible, and other standard protocols still result in failed jobs, in many cases those jobs can be salvaged through a little creative thinking.

Always add two more extra days Machines are getting better but they always throw errors. Any printing job unless it’s a less than 3 hour job will require a day to set up and run . (1) spend more time setting up your files properly. Bad files mean errors - prepare files with utmost care (2) make sure your materials are fresh and your equipment is ready. Spend extra time going over your materials and system (3) spare time for clean up. Printing is nice but who’s gonna clean up that scaffold or support ? It takes a lot of time to clean supports and while cleaning it’s possible to break the work Overall most ppl assume 3-D printing is easy however, it’s actually very time consuming- give yourself two more days to get the job done
