How can you stay motivated in computer repair, despite setbacks?

I think it’s the other way around. Your niche and love for it should encompass a broad range of devices and expertise. Narrowing in on one can be fun for a moment especially when you get the satisfaction of becoming very proficient at it, but doing a similar task over and over can cause burnout in my opinion. Rotating around the bases of diagnostics, repairs, data recovery, and different model devices while slowly becoming proficient in all of them is what creates a great repair tech.

Just remember that while it might be a simple fix or a 'duh' moment for us, you are changing the end-users day by correcting their issue(s). When you hit a wall, take that as an opportunity to learn something new. There's always a positive in every negative. You just have to be willing to find it.

Having the passion for the tech helps a great deal. My advice to fellow young techs just starting out is to always use computer repair as your first step in the field and never the last. When I did computer repair, I studied networking, cloud, security and project management. All of these skills helped me a great deal in keeping my dream alive. Very very true. While working for a University my goal was to complete every repair and task as quickly and as efficiently as possible. I’ve been on the other end of a broken device and know what it feels like to be without it. Especially in academics. However this was a daunting task and was not physically possible. Complete 4 repairs and 7 more show up. It was frustrating and it was because I didn’t establish realistic goals in line with my resources and abilities. (But it didn’t keep me from trying!)

This is very generic knowledge for anything you do in a business or career. It isn’t specific to just computer support. Something I can see AI algorithms picking up easily.

I worked with computer repair for 12 years with a major retailer. I found that setting realistic goals is not only important for yourself, but also for the client. Many times what may appear to be a minor issue is just the tip of the iceberg. Always allow more time to make a repair than you actually believe you will need. Make sure the customer understands this. People always appreciate being called early to pick up their machine. Their satisfaction will carry over and improve your satisfaction.

Well I personally like to take other avenues for the other time there's aways PC and Mac. But I like to kill the same old clean installs and driver installs of windows with Linux . mostly because I can use my GPT AL compile my on software after a little debugging and give it a run the rest is the same and after twenty plus years well excuse any typos and aways remember under Moore's law it's a constant change stay focused

This goes for many disciplines. However, this is a profession that repeated mistakes are not tolerable. Devices are valuable. Data is even more valuable. If errors occur that result in breaking someone’s device, or worse, losing their data — then this discipline might not be for you. Put yourself in their shoes. You need a sense of confidence in your profession and skills to do this job well.

The field of IT is vast, and it's valuable to excel in one or two specific IT skills. At times, it may seem like I'm stuck in a repetitive routine, but I've realized that computer issues, such as screen, drive, or keyboard problems, continue to arise. There's a constant need for someone to fix these issues, and that's what I do on a daily basis. When I encounter problems I can't resolve, I'm not afraid to seek help where it's available, as seeking assistance when needed is a wise practice.

I had a handful of mistakes encountered in my work repairing computers. It's a good learning experience, and expensive! While it makes sense to learn from mistakes, it is also something that we should stay away from. One thing I learned from my experience is that, if you are in doubt, don't do it. Do your research online, understand the situation completely, and always be certain before you begin working on repairs. Do a test using your own computers first, because that way, if you break or damage something, it's not the customers'.

I find recording the mistakes and thier resolutions in a OneNote can help greatly. It may take a little effort jotting them down but it turns into an invaluable aid in the future. Also as said before, having an open team willing to assist will help everyone avoid mistakes in the future. The important thing to do is to not repeat the mistakes

A repair shop needs character and fun for the environment to feel enjoyable. Some of this stuff is tedious. If you don’t have some fun co-workers or music or any of that stuff it will not feel fun. Most importantly seek out the veteran repairers, the savants, and learn from them as much as you can.

Yes this is important. To me however the rewards came from personally going the extra mile and feeling the genuine appreciation from a user that needed their device fixed. There nothing like helping others and getting that recognition from them.

Always, always, always reward yourself. You can never depend on others, whether it be coworkers, managers, or individuals in your personal life to reward you. Always strive to do your best in your field of work, and when you succeed, reward yourself. Whatever you enjoy or can easily obtain that feels rewarding, DO IT.
