How can you stay inspired and motivated as a textile designer?

Having a lot of different cultural experiences can really inspire and motivate you as a textile artist. Different cultures have their own fabrics, patterns, colors, and ways of making things that can help you see your own work in a new light. If you can, visit places that are known for their textile history or take part in culture events and workshops closer to home. Getting to know people from other countries can help you appreciate the art of textile design more and give you new ideas for your own work. This method not only helps you learn new design words, but it also makes you feel connected to your work, which keeps your love for the craft alive.

Finding your niche in textile design is quite the journey! A good starting point is to reflect on your own interests in art, nature, cultures, and historical periods. Are you drawn to a specific style or theme? How much can you learn further about this interest? Explore different mediums when you begin to create; will you create your own fabrics, use traditional drawing or painting methods, digitally design, or a combination of techniques? These steps will help shape a style that is uniquely yours.

In my experience it’s all about who your client is. If you have a close relationship with your buyers then you keep getting inspired. Lose that connection and you will lose your company ????♀?

An excellent way to stay inspired is to use social media sites for both getting ideas and making connections. Not only do sites like Pinterest, Instagram, and Behance give you visual ideas, but they also let you connect with other artists and share your work. You can show off your work, get comments, or even start a conversation about a design problem you're having. Connecting with other people in this way sparks your creativity, gives you support, and sometimes even leads to group projects that push your design skills to the limit.

When working for a brand there are constant boxes to tik, and it can start to feel regimented. It’s hard to know when a new idea or a new way to do something that “has always been done a way” can be introduced and potentially adopted. This all effects the creative flow, designers might start to self edit too much. To counter act this definitely find partners on different teams, learn about factory capabilities and investigate the factory willingness to sample something or try something new. Taking partners within your company and within your supply chain are lifesavers. And any way that you can keep the work fun will always help with inspiration and creative flow.

Seeking feedback from other designers is a great way to grow professionally and refine your skills. Sometimes, asking specific questions beyond "Does this look good?" is most helpful. Designers often respond to a "mood" when presented with work, so practice finding out more in those conversations. Could you find out what's working and where areas need improvement? Bonus points if you can get feedback from non-designers as well! The factory and technical or production team you're working with will have invaluable information that can help you make informed decisions. These conversations are meaningful for collaboration between individuals and/or within teams and can help pinpoint areas of strength and weakness to focus on for future designs.

Feedback is not always right you must design what you feel is best, everyone has an opinion but it's not always right. Colaboration being a perfectionist I rarely do I must open up more.

Networking is also very important. Participate in workshops, exhibitions, and events related to textile design. Networking with other designers and seeing their work can spark new ideas.

Collaborate with professionals and friends from other industries. Graphic designers, industrial/product designers, or the friend who just scribbled something on a napkin. Working across disciplines can inspire new ideas, how to approach them, and broaden your skill set. Never underestimate the brainstorming jump-start a random project generator can give! Challenge yourself to create unique color palettes and intricate patterns. Experiment with color theory, mixing unexpected combinations and exploring the psychological effects of color. Push yourself to create original patterns that tell a story or evoke emotions.

Always challenge yourself and inspire yourself it's not a race so if starting something new give it time you can always master the time later for making money.

It has been useful for me to challenge myself to new creative horizons, not only from the search for inspiration with themes that at the moment challenge me, but also exploring new techniques in textile design not only at the graphic level but also at the product level as I enhance my creativity through the experiences that impact my life, color, textures, fabrics, etc. every day. In conclusion, challenging yourself to create from your personal experience by turning those experiences into a product that first looks aesthetically commercial and that solves some consumer problems.

Design competitions are a fun way to keep yourself inspired and give yourself new challenges. Competitions can push you to think of new ideas and do your best work under timed conditions. When you win, you'll feel good about yourself and get praise. You can learn from the process and get more exposure even if you don't win. A lot of competitions also give you briefs that can help you think of themes or things you wouldn't have thought of otherwise. This can help you be more creative.

It can be very rewarding to spend time on personal projects that are related to your hobbies and are not required by clients or your job. You can try new things and look into new ideas without worrying about making money with these projects. Personal projects, like making a cloth line based on your favorite books or trying out eco-friendly materials, can get you excited about design again and help you make one-of-a-kind pieces that will stand out in your portfolio.

Whenever I feel like I’m struggling to get inspired I search for exhibitions that are currently running and try and visit museums until something triggers an idea. I also visit shops and sometimes just getting away from the studio and going for a walk is enough to get the imagination going again.

There’s inspiration all around us! There’s beauty in our surroundings! As long as you keep your eyes and your mind open you will always be inspired. I’m always taking pictures and making notes of things I see; nature, structures , colors, etc. I archive them for later use.

Inspiration comes from diverse sources; look at what is happening in your city. Art museums, Galleries, architecture, nature, exhibitions and even street art, can trigger ideas: forms, shapes, colour combinations that will become your first/primary source of inspiration…create an album or page on your phone to have those ideas handy. It is always best to have your own resources than “borrow” ideas from other designers work, as people say :“ enjoy the process as much as the result”

Always be on the lookout for new and exciting inspiration. Traveling to new destinations, carrying a sketchbook for drawing, and researching different trend forecasting websites, will allow you stay current as a textile designer.

I always find that ideas come to me when I step away from the screen and that focusing on exercise, good sleep and diet becomes more important the busier I get.

This element of staying inspired as a textile designer is in my experience often left to the individual to do. I've found this difficult in the past when juggling commercial pressures and important deadlines. That's why I'm investigating how leaders might implement a creative practice into work life for their teams. My goal is to help individuals and teams embed a creative habit which will help with overall wellbeing, improved creative outputs and innovation to name a few ??

Focusing on the present moment represents a significant challenge for me. Taking care of myself means practicing mindful presence. Being fully connected to the now frees me from the shackles of past traumas and worries about the future. Establishing this balance is crucial to sustaining my creativity and happiness as a textile designer.

Making a creative practice can help you stay motivated and inspired all the time. You should set aside regular times to draw, look into new trends, or try out new methods. A routine will help you regularly spend time on your craft, even if you don't feel like it at the time. This practice can help you come up with a lot of ideas and deal with design problems in a more proactive way over time.

Always it's so easy to work 16 to 18 hours a day take a break I'm not very good at this I need to be taking breaks and re-charging

Consider being a mentor to someone coming up behind you. Sometimes we learn the most when we are teaching and sharing. As one of my mentors said to me, when you are climbing the ladder, be sure to stop now and then to reach back to someone who is just coming up, and give them a leg up. Those relationships can last a lifetime. Some of our best brainstorming sessions can come with somebody we have mentored in the past.

Staying relevant in the industry is highly important. Make sure you’re up to date on watching the recent fashion shows and know how they are received. Depending on who your client is, they may want to be more aligned with a specific style or trend that is happening. Being able to put your own spin on it, translate it to your client’s life style, and stay current alongside other retail or fashion brands is essential to adding value since creative directors rely on textile designers to be ahead of the curve.

What else to consider In this tough world for the creative consider yourself if its not working or making money as a career take a hiatus and go back. Recessions are not forever.

In my experience, I think the number one deciding factor is your target market. Whether you’re working for a company with big high st clients, or self employed, there’s always a customer & their taste/brief/direction matters. High St, look to catwalk shows & take inspiration from there. Anything else, you look at your customer base… who does your client sell to, what is their preferred price point. Then take inspiration suitable for the season from anything & everything around you. Immerse yourself visually in history, art, architecture, nature, science & latest technology/products available for your designs. For example what are fabric printer’s or manufacturers offering that’s a new technique, embellishment or finish & take it from there
