Hands-on is simply the best way to learn. Carve out some time to play around with the technology you are interested in. Some examples of what I do is to have my own accounts on GCP or other Cloud providers to experiment and play around when I read or hear about something interesting. The current AI hype is another good chance to play a bit. You can install models locally and test them. This will force you to understand the technical terms and you will learn about some of the challenges and costs associated with running such instances. For me continuous learning is about making sure it is fun - It cannot get more fun than playing around ;)

Recently I have been practising a lot of AI algorithms. Experimentation is the driving force behind innovation in machine learning. Others have said it but I will shout it: Get your hands on the keyboard and Jump in! The best managers I have had and the best compliments I have been given as a manager is that I knew the technology and how to solve problems with the team. In order to stay up to date on skills you have to sharpen them. You sharpen these skills by getting into the pit with your team and problem solving for answers through trial and error. Whiteboard. Discussions.

One thing I would like to add is that encouraging a continuous learning culture within the team and focusing on skill development and different strategies for problem solving and maintaining a clear communication between the team.

What I like to do is to stay curious and discuss latest trends and changes in technology with my employees and peers. I am lucky to work in an environment with many experts and there is always something to learn from them. Ask questions! Don't try to seem like you know everything. Especially if you have passionate people in your organization it is a great source of knowledge as they usually love to talk about such topics.

Get hands on! Technical managers need to understand everything that is happening in the cloud(s) they manage. Understanding what is going on requires more than reading and obtaining certifications. Understanding is attained through hands on work. This does not mean you deep dive into all things, as that is not possible at large organizations. Instead, focus on attaining surface level knowledge of all things, and then on occasion dive deep into one or two work streams. Understanding is the application of knowledge, and the only way to get there is through hands on experience.

Most importantly, always remain hands-on and just not on test/dev work but in production. Join and present in meet-ups, read whats-new of choice of interested cloud technology.
