How can you source deals more effectively as a venture capitalist?

Ecosystem development can play such a huge role in deal sourcing. Lots of funds build networks across angels, other VC funds, and accelerators/incubators - but there are tons of other great ecosystem nodes. A few key ones for us are: ? Universities with strong Engineering programs (especially at the graduate level. ?Regional or city-specific economic development groups ?Individual super-connectors and key industry publications, communities, and newsletters

Build your network up, be proactive and responsive. If your not willing to put in the work than you will get nothing in return. Hard work brings in hard cash rewards

Establishing an ecosystem fosters trust as connections often stem from the investor's network, emphasizing the value for VC professionals to invest time in cultivating and maintaining these relationships.

While a deal may be the end outcome, connecting with others is never as transactional as that. The core of "networking" is just getting to understand founders and investors, what drives them, and asking WHY they do what they do. Knowing their story, and finding ways to help and add value to them (with no expectation of reciprocation) is just a better way to operate - unlike how many "networking" groups are seen these days.

Excellent question. I have years of experience working with private equity funds and venture capitalists. The mistakes around deal origination are breathtaking. The biggest single mistake is the lack of respect paid to brokers on the deal origination side. Brokers are actually the kindling that light the largest of fund fires, but all I have seen is how quickly fund managers take glee in disrespecting the work of (the often infrastructure lacking) brokers that populate this sector. Venture capital needs ventures, and brokers usually have an eye for that. If they were better treated, their terms and tendency to try to overcontrol the deals would diminish.

Another way to source deals more effectively is to have a clear and focused investment thesis. This means having a specific vision of what kind of startups you are looking for, what sectors or trends you are interested in, what stage and size of funding you are offering, and what value proposition you are bringing to the table. A well-defined thesis can help you narrow down your search, filter out irrelevant deals, and communicate your expectations and goals to potential founders and partners.

Building a thesis takes time and usually starts by getting to the core first principles of what you (or the firm) believes in. For us, that's impact-first (which is a deal killer in many cases). Only once you've iterated on your thinking multiple times can you really land on a rock-solid investment thesis.

Define your thesis with the following framework: - cheque sizes - geographic location - sector That you as an investor have the most domain specific expertise & connections / interest - diversity if applicable (I.e. at least one female founder, etc) - early / later stage company - minimum amount of traction you’d like to see This will make it much easier to say “no” so you can get to a “Heck Yeah!”

I planned my startup for a year without telling one single person my plan, I built up my network, I took an interest in their post and responded quite often, I looked throw Linkein profiles like a hawk to for connections to individuals & companies that need my cmservice I was aiming to provide. Startup business loans are far and few between, so o slowly bought the necessary tools I would need to startup my business, got all my certifications and researched my competitors, pricing below theirs, offering more & better service 24/7, 365 days a year and then I knew I needed to hire one person that I could count on. I hired my best friend, my weakness is her strengths and vise verse. Even drove for Uber to pay her & start up cost. Plan plan plan

Meeting people IRL is unmatched in terms of being able to create genuine connections - but the reach you get from online platforms (like LinkedIn) is an order of magnitude greater. There's literally no comparison - if you're looking for companies, you NEED to be utilising online platforms. End of story.

A third way to source deals is to use online platforms and tools that can help you discover and track startups. There are various platforms that aggregate and showcase startups, such as AngelList, Crunchbase, Product Hunt, and PitchBook. You can use these platforms to browse through different categories, sectors, and stages of startups, and to monitor their progress, traction, and funding. You can also use online tools such as Google Alerts, Twitter, and LinkedIn to follow relevant keywords, topics, and influencers, and to stay updated on the latest news and trends.

A great way to source deals is to pro-actively search for Founders on LinkedIn! Simply search for “2nd Connections” with the Title “Founder” and add them with a note saying you’re interested in what they are doing. 80% of the time they will engage with you and request a meeting if they are considering fundraising. You can also get a good idea of their background, network and personal branding ability this way.

In one way the internet has made it easier to research and on the other hand it has complicated. We have so much access to information that it can we overwhelming and time consuming.

To source deals as a venture capitalist (VC): 1. Network actively within the startup ecosystem. 2. Attend industry events, conferences, and pitch competitions. 3. Build relationships with founders, other VCs, and angel investors. 4. Utilize online platforms like AngelList, Crunchbase, and LinkedIn. 5. Join relevant communities and forums. 6. Offer value-added services such as mentorship or expertise to startups. 7. Leverage your existing portfolio companies for referrals. 8. Collaborate with accelerators, incubators, and startup hubs. 9. Stay informed about emerging trends and sectors. 10. Maintain a strong online presence through blogs, social media, and thought leadership.

A must for building up your network, aka future customers. But also Facebook, see who your friends know, request them as a friend, build up comratery and they in turn will be your first customers and bring you more. If they have a business, use them. I have gotten so many referrals from a man that owns a renovation service in my subdivision and he sees someone posting looking for what I provide, he will respond and tag me in his comments, also used a friend as my realtor when I bought my house and will use him again on my soon to be next home purchase. You see, he sees a post for services I provide and he will instant message them my contact info and then send me theirs. Got my first job through him!

A fourth way to source deals is to engage with content that can help you learn more about the startup ecosystem, the problems and solutions that founders are working on, and the feedback and opinions of other investors and experts. You can read blogs, newsletters, podcasts, books, and reports that cover topics related to your investment thesis, your target sectors, and your portfolio companies. You can also create and share your own content, such as articles, videos, or podcasts, to showcase your expertise, insights, and perspectives, and to attract potential founders and partners.

As a venture capitalist (VC), sourcing more deals is crucial for identifying promising investment opportunities. Here are some strategies to help you expand your deal flow: 1. **Network Building**: Cultivate a strong network within the startup ecosystem. Attend industry events, conferences, and networking functions to connect with entrepreneurs, fellow investors, and industry experts. Actively participate in online communities and forums related to your target sectors. 2. **Establish Partnerships**: Collaborate with accelerators, incubators, and other VC firms to gain access to a broader pool of startups. This is important! I’d like more funds to create the role of a “scout” for this purpose. Find individuals who aren’t in your network who can scan their ecosystem for relevant startups. Formalize this role and motivate them by providing them a finders fee when you invest in one of the startups they recommend.

One of the most important pieces of advice I ever heard was a bit contrarian -- from Reid Hoffman's book "The Startup of You." The book talks about the way professionals network -- always seeking to speak to those above them -- "upward." But sometimes those in other areas, ie junior staff, can be the most important people to speak to. Think of today's youth -- they look at things differently, bring different life experiences to the table, and have a completely different mindset. They see different possibilities than we do. One of my best professional experiences came from a mentee, who told me about a UN opportunity. I ended up working with heads of state, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ambassadors and other world leaders for several years.

A fifth way to source deals is to experiment with different methods and approaches that can help you find and connect with startups that fit your criteria. You can try cold emailing or calling founders that you find interesting, or hosting webinars or workshops that can offer value and education to entrepreneurs. You can also partner with accelerators, incubators, universities, or other organizations that can provide you with access to their networks and programs. You can test and measure the results of your experiments, and refine your methods accordingly.

Talk to people you meet through out the day. 15M deal by talking to an Uber driver 30M deal by talking to someone at a wedding 80M by talking to a person that sent me an email about a non-related topic … the list goes on. Every person around you is a deal - you just have to listen to them talk!
