Show cross functional understanding is demonstrated through telling a story of own experience dealing with or sorting out an activity or topic that crosses over at least 3-4 functions and how each function treated it. If you have such experience it would be easy to demonstrate it.

Example: “Do you enjoy cross-departmental work?” Your interviewer wants to know whether you work well not only with your teammates but also with subject matter experts in other departments. Your answer also hints at how you deal with change and handle diverse opinions and perspectives. Use specific examples to implore that you enjoy and are good at cross-functional teamwork. Maybe you’ve worked as a marketing professional dealing directly with the sales team, or perhaps you’re a designer who often works with UX and web development professionals. Whatever it is, share detailed scenarios of times you worked well with other teams.

Action: I facilitated regular communication channels, organized cross-functional meetings, and established clear roles and responsibilities for each team member. Using the STAR method is a great way of articulating your experience with cross-functional teams. Make sure you share your role in the team. Were you the leader, were you a key contributor, and how did you impact the team?

The STAR method helps you tell a clear story in interviews: Describe a Situation you faced, the Task you needed to accomplish, the Actions you took, and the Results you achieved. It's a simple yet effective way to showcase your experience and skills, including working with cross-functional teams.

When interviewing candidates, I often ask about their last conflict or challenge. If someone (like yourself) has worked recently on a cross-functional team, the likelihood for a recent challenge (and/or conflict) is very high. Here it might be a good point to show off in a humble manner, by acknowledging mistakes and learnings that were made. As a company a past success is no indication for future success, but serious learnings from projects with cross-functional teams are a good basis for the next success.

To add to the above, I would try to be concise and specific in your example. Also try to use plain words and avoid technical language which the counterparty might not fully understand. Focus on the set-up, the value added, the collaboration and the delivery. Of course, make sure you focus on your specific role in that situation.

Whilst asking questions is a key part of the interview and an important opportunity to shine, make sure these are well prepared in advance and allow the interwiewer to see interest snd understanding from your end. I would not recommend to challenge your interviewer on certain topics but to show that yoi understand the firm and their prespective on cross-functional team allocations.

This framework effectively links team synergy to positive business outcomes, demonstrating the profound influence of unified teamwork on the company’s success.

In an interview, when asked about a challenging situation or a project I am particularly proud of, I immediately reflect on a specific case that epitomizes the essence and value of true collaboration across multiple departments. This example not only highlights my ability to navigate complex situations but also underscores the transformative power of cross-functional teamwork in achieving remarkable outcomes. Note: All this is possible when you actually have been in such a situation. If you haven't yet faced it, be genuine and talk about the collaboration blockers you can imagine and how you would address them.

It is also worth considering how decisions were made in the team. Cross-functional teams bring a wealth of skills, experience and opinions to the table, so it can be a challenge at times to make decisions. You should reflect on this and how any conflict was managed. How did you make decisions? How were the team engaged in the decisions? and how was any conflict resolved?
