A certification with computer repair can only get you so far, in my past role we interviewed many candidates with all the right certifications, but they did not know how to build a computer, or fix a laptop. In my opinion, that is the biggest gap. Certifications are important, but hands on experience, and willingness to learn if you do not have that experience yet is key. You can have more certifications than the next person, however if you come in with a "better than you" mindset when being showed the basics, that is a poor attitude to have when being shown something.

Certificates help get your resume noticed, but after that, it is all up to you. Sharing knowledge is great because it makes the entire team better. The most poignant point is taking on extra responsibilities. 99% of the time the title/money comes after you demonstrate your ability and desire to perform, not before.

One skill that is lacking for humans in general is learning to listen. Most humans can hear, but a lot of them tend not to listen. Use a pad and pencil/pen to jot down notes while listening to more experienced individuals. Feedback needs to be taken with a grain of salt and another of pepper. IT fellows tend to be rough when providing feedback. Focus on the message of the feedback, rather than on the delivery. Act on the feedback and improve based on it

Identify areas where processes can be streamlined or improved within the computer repair department. Propose your ideas and, if possible, implement changes to increase efficiency.

Proactivity must be a natural skill if you are an IT member crew. Investigate, read a lot of infomation (books, blogs, articles, etc) analize it and use the more efectivo way to solve the issue.

Seeking proactive feedback from a manager is a difficult thing to get yourself to do. But if you can seek this feedback out and work to implement the changes suggested, it will gain you favor with your manager as well as help you grow yourself and your skillsets. The answer is "No." If you have gained valuable knowledge that makes you more valuable as a technician, you should share that with as many coworkers as possible for the following reasons: 1. You show confidence in your abilities. You're not worried about losing your job. 2. You show that you are not only a team player but also a team builder. 3. You elevate yourself in your boss's eyes as someone who is ready to take on more responsibilities or even leadership opportunities.

Always be willing to and looking for ways to learn. Once you stop learning, you stop growing as an individual and professional. And most importantly be willing and ready to share your experiences and knowledge with colleagues. Normally, when your leader/manager is looking for someone to promote, they’re looking for someone who is showing leadership capabilities. Part of leadership is self-expansion and the desire to share information with colleagues. Even the act of end-user/customer training (if you don’t have direct colleagues) is important and can be seen as a component of showing your expansion of knowledge.

Identity common and sticky issues. These are often tickets that you get a lot. The kind you can solve in such a routine manner they aren't even fun. Now, find a PERMANENT fix. It may seem counter productive to drop the amount of incoming tickets, it's not.

I am a huge advocate of getting involved in tasks that are outside of your standard job role whenever possible. This will show your willingness to be a team player, it will expand your technical skillset as well as your social network and it will push you into some likely uncomfortable situations where you have the biggest opportunities to grow. Being active and showing that you care to grow is a great way to stand out and get noticed.

Show that you’re teaching the end users if feasible. Better than fixing the problem is educating the end user to prevent the problem in future and make their job easier, while also resolving the problem that day. If they know how to fix the problem then when their coworker experiences a similar problem it might get resolved without a call to IT. Make technical support a proactive job rather than reactive. Don’t shy away from shoulder tap tickets. Provide additional value to every customer.

I have a rule about saying "can't" I try very hard to not use that word. That problem CAN be solved, let's find that solution. Note, this is not about saying "Yes" to everything. I MAY or MAY NOT have the best solution, but I can help you.

In my career, I've seen two types stand out the most: Type 1, the "smart guy". These are the ones who see things in different ways. They are either great at identifying new and better ways of doing things or bringing clutch solutions to problems others couldn't solve. Type 1 is hard to be. Type 2, the "cross the i's and dot the t's" - Slight poking fun aside, the type 2 makes sure documentation is tight and that knowledge share happens. They seek out the type 1s and pick their brains, then filter and process that information into a logical document that can be followed by those who don't see the world from the unique angle of the type 1. Despite the fact that anyone can be a type 2, its much rarer and thus much more valuable.

I would analyze the situation, if it is an internal manufacturer situation then, work with the manufacturer, if it is a software issue, resort to the last known successfull backup, If you were smart, you would have considered building a VM of the enterprise server taking into consideration the importancy of the server role as a primary disaster recovery solution. Then, after ensuring the VM is working as expected and could further build a virtual technological world, I would ditch the hardware and call it a day. However, if the physical hardware is still needed/desired, I would get the necessary components needed to repair the physical hardware to rebuild the system and restore the last configuration.
