1 Set clear goals

Before you start your mentoring journey, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and how your mentor can help you. Think about your short-term and long-term goals, your strengths and weaknesses, and your expectations from the relationship. Share your goals with your mentor and ask for their input and advice. Be open to their suggestions and feedback, but also be realistic and flexible. Remember that your mentor is not there to do the work for you, but to support you and challenge you.

Y aquí debemos tratar la metodología, la cronología de las sesiones y los hitos intermedios - ?Que objetivos cuantificables y no cuantificables quiero conseguir con esto? - ?Cuáles son las áreas que quiero trabajar en mi mejora profesional? - otras consideraciones del programa Por supuesto estos puntos en ocasiones no podrán ser contestados por el profesional al que se ayuda y se necesitará una sesión. Having clear goals is important at the start of your mentee journey, but it's important to keep reviewing these as you go and share those updates with your mentor. Ahead of each session, it is helpful to give your mentor a sense of what you'd like to discuss so that they can ensure they come prepared (and well-reflected!) - send them an agenda of sorts. When doing this, think about your goals for the session (what you'd like to learn/discuss right now, depending on what is going on in the present) and for the broader journey too (how it fits in to what you want to achieve in the short/medium/long term).

2 Be proactive

One of the best ways to show you're a great mentee is to take charge of your own learning and development. Don't wait for your mentor to tell you what to do or how to do it. Instead, seek out opportunities to learn new skills, apply new knowledge, and grow your network. Ask your mentor for specific tasks, projects, or resources that can help you achieve your goals. Show your mentor that you are eager to learn and willing to take action. Don't be afraid to ask questions, share your opinions, and seek feedback.

Communication is key to any successful mentoring relationship. You need to communicate with your mentor regularly, clearly, and respectfully. Establish a communication plan that works for both of you, including the frequency, mode, and agenda of your meetings. Keep your mentor updated on your progress, challenges, and achievements. Great mentees are coachable. While they may not have considered your approach or methodologies before, they are willing to take feedback and advice and apply it. Additionally, great mentees ask follow-up questions. Let's say they are considering a new approach you mentioned to them, however, they have a few questions or concerns. Instead of going off and doing something without fully understanding it, they inquire as to why or how certain things are being done. This shows that they are fully engaged and actively thinking about the potential outcome(s) of a situation.
