First and foremost: Lumens are lumens. There are many ways to light a scene; or better yet - shape light that already exists within a frame. Sometimes it’s about taking a look around, and saying to one’s self: “what is already here, that can be used to our advantage.” It often times consists of taking light away, or modifying what is already prevalent in the surroundings. I.e. closing the blinds or curtains, or rotating the subject so the light falls off in a certain way. Avoid harsh light in the face to keep subject from squinting. Also, if you place subject in a shaded space your background light may become over exposed. This is where a light source can be a gray way to balance your shot. Keep lights above your subject so light source falls naturally in an outdoor setting.

Here are my tips: 1. Use a sun diffuser when the sunlight is harsh. 2. Use a reflector to reduce the shadow. 3. Bring some LED lights as backup 4. Check the weather forecast before you go for outdoor shooting. 5. Location recce (check the environment before shooting, check the sunlight position, what is the best timing to do shooting)

The only reason to have a standard "kit" ready to go is if you have no idea what you're getting into for the location. Assuming that: -You're shooting by yourself -You don't know if you'll have access to power -You don't know how accessible the locations are Then you'll want a 3 point lighting kit that's light enough to carry, can run on batteries, with adjustable colour temperature. This will usually limit you to LED lights. But again, this is based on having almost zero information about what you're getting into, most commonly on corporate based shoots that'll require a talking-head setup.

In my experience- have backup lights in boot of car, have battery powered lights as not everywhere has power where you want to shoot. Have several extension cables for PowerPoints not near where you want to shoot.
