Time-bound means that your goal has a deadline or a timeframe, not open-ended or indefinite.
It's more than just SMART goals - smart, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-sensitive. You've got to have a solid WHY and underlying DESIRE for you to be able to hit your goals with success. Adding in accountability and the plan on how you will achieve your goals is even more important.
Before you set your SMART goals, you need to assess your available resources and identify your constraints. Resources can include money, time, staff, equipment, materials, information, and support. Constraints can include budget, deadlines, workload, skills, quality standards, and regulations. You need to know what you have and what you need to achieve your goals. You also need to anticipate any potential risks or challenges that might affect your resources or goals.
Once you have assessed your resources and constraints, you need to prioritize your goals based on their importance and urgency. You can use a matrix or a list to rank your goals according to their impact and feasibility. You should focus on the goals that are most relevant and achievable for your team, and avoid the goals that are irrelevant or unrealistic. You should also consider the interdependence and sequence of your goals, and how they affect each other.
In my opinion, this part of setting SMART goals is the most important and crucial step. If a team lead doesn't have a clear understanding of the goals and company's strategies, he/she can't prioritize the goals, And will mislead the team of doing their jobs.
After you have prioritized your goals, you need to break them down into smaller and more manageable steps or tasks. You can use a plan or a timeline to outline the actions and milestones that you need to complete to reach your goals. You should assign roles and responsibilities to your team members, and communicate your expectations and standards clearly. You should also allocate your resources wisely and efficiently, and avoid wasting or overusing them.
Often the smallest barrier is the reason why goals aren't achieved. Without any budget you can ensure that you create a business culture that allows for open and honest discussion about the small individual steps that need to be taken to ensure the goals will be achieved and crucially, what could get in the way. Although business goals will be set from the top, getting input from the team allows them to actually happen. This approach sets better businesses apart from the rest. Team members are encouraged to risk assess those barriers, no matter how small, and make the goals more likely to be achieved.
When you are setting goals for your business, set them in different periods. I like to use the 5/3/12/90 Rule. 5: Start with 5-year goals and work backward from there. 3: Once you've determined your five-year goal, It's time to break down your 5-year goal into actionable milestones that you can put into 3 Year and 12 Month goals that you can achieve and your team can accomplish. 12: 12-month goals that you'll be using for the next year, and will help you stay on track to achieving your big audacious 5-year goals. Follow the same formula to break down the goal. 90: You'll want to assess your goals every 90 days to make sure you're on track.
Finally, you need to monitor and adjust your goals as you execute your plan and measure your results. You should track your progress and performance regularly, and compare them with your SMART criteria. You should celebrate your achievements and reward your team, and learn from your failures and mistakes. You should also solicit feedback and suggestions from your team and other stakeholders, and use them to improve your goals and strategies. You should be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances and needs, and revise your goals accordingly.
