Understanding your values and knowing what you want to do is crucial. Understanding your strengths and weaknesses can help you get aligned with the areas that could be good for you. Then, you take action and go after what you want to do. Hire a good career coach if you are unsure. This investment can save you years of misery.

It's tempting to set career goals based on past accomplishments, common trajectories (such as moving from individual contributor to manager), or skills that others praise us for. But even if being recognized by others gives you a boost, it's not the same as understanding what's most fulfilling for you. Think of the most rewarding experiences in your life — not just your career! What were the circumstances of that experience? What aspects of it brought you the most joy? When did you feel most connected to yourself? What was happening in that moment? What makes it stand out for you? These are just some of the questions that can help you start identifying your values and what's most fulfilling to you.

This exercise can feel vast. If you don't know what career path you want to be on, how are you supposed to picture yourself in 5 years? So take your time with it. Picture a perfect workday — what's happening? What time do you wake up? How long are you awake in the morning before beginning work? Do you work at home or commute? Do you work alone or in teams? Are you client-facing or internal? Do you work with your hands or your head? Do you travel? It's ok if you have several options for these answers, or a few different visions. Full clarity comes later — there are no wrong answers here.

Do what works for you. I have learned to set SMART goals, I've set them myself, and I have advised direct reports and consulting clients to do the same. But to be honest — I don't always find them motivating. You don't "fail" if you don't accomplish the goal — but there's an implied sense that you should strive to get as close as possible. I've found that this causes me to question the action steps and rebuild them over and over ... until I've lost sight of the goal. So I've found that cutting out the goal and focusing on repeated actions is more motivating for me. So, it's ok to analyze what works best for you and carve your own way. The distinction between goals and tasks is important here. Are you more motivated by goals — outcomes over which you don't have complete control (such as "get promoted by EOY")? Or are the actions you take — which you have more control over — more motivating to you (such as "set 1-on-1 with team lead to discuss future")? Yes, traditional goals encompass both — the outcome and the steps. But if you find one or the other demotivating, that traditional format doesn't matter. You have to approach it in the way that makes the most sense and is most personally fulfilling for you — otherwise, you risk abandoning the goal altogether.
