1 Understand the problem

This will help you identify the relevant physical phenomena, the dominant loading and deformation modes, and the critical regions of interest. You should also review the available data and information, such as material properties, geometry, dimensions, tolerances, and experimental or analytical results, that can support your FEA project.

Understanding the problem is most crucial step in any FE Analysis. Sometimes, it becomes necessary to apply reverse boundary conditions, that is, loading surfaces are given displacement conditions while fixed surfaces are loaded. One typical example is Support Stool which are placed below saddle. Objective is to check the deformation at base. In this case, we apply load at base even if the load is transferred to stool through saddle at top, and provide a fixed constraint at top surface in contact with saddle.

2 Choose the type of boundary conditions

There are two main types of boundary conditions for FEA analysis: displacement and force. Displacement boundary conditions specify the displacement or rotation of a node or a set of nodes in a certain direction or plane. Force boundary conditions apply a force or a moment to a node or a set of nodes, or a pressure or a traction to a face or a surface. Depending on the problem, you may need to use one or both types of boundary conditions, or combine them in different ways. 3 Apply the boundary conditions correctly

One of the most common mistakes in FEA analysis is to apply the boundary conditions incorrectly, either by over-constraining or under-constraining the model. 4 Use symmetry and simplification

One of the advantages of FEA analysis is that you can use symmetry and simplification to reduce the complexity and size of the model, and thus save computational time and resources.
