Based on our experience: - One of the important ways to secure the network is to install the suitable materials to each environment, in addition to the ground cables and using direct buried cables to avoid sudden cuts, we also use HDPE pipes with detectable steel wire for more protection of the cable. - Further, the physical network is not only underground, there is also Ariel network and it is very important to use suitable materials and cables as well, such as: ADSS cables for installing FO network on electrical poles/towers. The dielectric cables are highly protecting the network from the electrical discharges. - Having power backup for the active components can be considered as kind of securing the network as well.
