This can sometimes be controversial or contentious for staff but how it's executed is key. Staff know that during peak seasons the course is busy which intrinsically equals more revenue for the course. What's sometimes forgotten is that this is also the best time to show the public how dedicated, happy, and motivated your team is to deliver the best possible experience at your course. What better way to get team buy in then to make them feel as if they have some skin in the game with some healthy incentives for things as basic as overall course health and a quick customer satisfaction score survey which can be obtained a variety of ways. Making it apparent that as the course profits so will you and supporting staff in that is key.

Communication with your staff is always key. Whether it is to offer them praise, or guidance. I spend more awake time with my crew than I do at home with my family. My team is part of my family. We will not always agree on everything, but we have a common goal we are working towards. I make sure to take time out of each of my days to talk to a team member, and it may not even be golf course maintenance related. Positive feedback is provided in morning meetings, where the team member can be recognized by the rest of the team, and offers an incentive to them as well. Any feedback that could be interpreted as negative is done privately. Building a team is a complex and challenging process, but it is worth the effort.

My team is part of my extended family, and I treat them as such. Our municipality is excellent when it comes to employee wellness, both physical and mental, and I encourage my team to take part in those resources. Additionally, we are in the process of implementing a mandatory two days off per week policy for all full time salaried employees.

I created sections and section men once o month the whole crew voted on the best section . The reward was a case of beer. The men loved it and took ownership of their sections . A little competition is great for business.

Even though I have been doing this for a minute, I do not know everything. Hearing new ideas is important to me. I encourage the team to offer me insights into how a task could be performed differently. I tell them up front, that I cannot promise I will adopt their ideas, but if they are efficient and SAFE, I will consider it.
