The script is the key to everything. Playwrights do so much of the work for us when they craft these scripts and a set designer must read and reread the script. They should know every line and have notes on the stage directions as well. Within the script and stage directions are valuable insights. Take Noises Off as an example. Within this script are little details of what should go wrong on the set and when. These are specialized tricks that must be designed specifically so they can be built effectively. A person who reads the script only once in this case may miss some of these leading to holes in the design and a scramble later on.

My best advise it to design for the team. Understand what they do and have they funtions and how new technology may need to be trained out to them. Work with the team and not against them. Use materials you know the team work with. Design so they understand. Work out install deatils that work for the venue and time line of geting/ outs. Dont design something over the top and unrealistic for you to work out and let then do the heavy lifting this isnt the way.

Scenery could be as empty or as crowded as you can imagine, what matters the most is the action it generates on fellow performers; yes scenery is the performer you build for other artists to play in it.
