Always be learning. - Figure out what skills you are lacking or weak in and work on those while you also learn new tech. - Spike the code! Just reading about data systems doesn't always get you to where you need to be. A great architect knows how the theory can be applied in practice and what the implementation details are going to be as the beginning of the runway for teams to work on. While this comes from experience it starts with learning a new technology by writing code and putting in the work to at least get it working locally if not deploy how your org does (which is best). - Old tech can be new tech for you too. Learn about mainframes if you don't know about them. They are still used to power most critical infrastructure systems.

with ever increasing volume and variety of data it is important to be aware and understand what works better and apply and make an informed decision. So learning on the new technologies ,architecture patterns helps a lot to try out/iterate and see what works best.

Example: As organizations increasingly demand real-time insights, staying informed about technologies like Apache Kafka for streaming data becomes essential. ~Master Diverse Data Storage Solutions: Use Case: Transition from traditional databases to NoSQL. Creating a flexible Enterprise Data Management Framework based on decoupled and interchangeable components and processes is key. This allows you to improve or adopt new technologies without redesigning "the wheel" each time. As an Enterprise Architect, I view adapting systems to change like a captain steering a ship - by scanning horizons, anticipating winds/currents, and adjusting course, we remain agile in dynamic seas; embracing feedback and new ideas equips us to meet emerging needs and opportunities.

Embracing change means understanding how you deal with ambiguity and open mindedness and putting in guard rails when necessary. Dealing with ambiguity is often very difficult, don't get caught up in rumor or gossip and don't take out your crystal ball and try to theorize what is going to happen. Ambiguity is a constraint you can't get around. Focus on what you do know and can control. Open mindedness is the ability to not hold your opinion as the only solution but the ability to consider other options and feedback. Always be listening. It is good to drive change and I promote that but also listen to what others are saying and suggesting and keep that open mind.

Earlier there used to be specific use cases which had to be created as frameworks but with advancements now most of it is available as products. As an architect you should be aware about different ways of tackling your problems, leveraging the available products and solutions, learning new things and at the same time unlearning a lot of the things which used to work on pre cloud times but have definitely become anti patterns now.

Adherence to best practices ensures that data solutions are robust, scalable, and secure, directly contributing to the stability and reliability of business operations. It also facilitates smoother transitions to new technologies, as best practices often incorporate flexibility to adapt to evolving tech landscapes. These practices are integral to delivering data solutions that drive operational efficiency and support the business's strategic goals in a rapidly changing digital environment.

Use Architecture Decision Records (ADR) to capture the best practices that you are following and when there are derivations and the reason for them. ADR are not only for best practices but they are good for them too.

Meetups and conferences - This is the best way to build networking with peers across the industry. Attending conferences, meetups focused on data architecture and related technologies. Professionals need to take advantage of networking sessions and social events to stay upto date on tech stack. Online forums and communities - Participating in communities and forums dedicated to data architecture. Sharing insights and engaging in discussions will help in building the networking. Professional certifications and training programs are other ways to build the network.

Why not be curious? This question challenges the complacency that can arise when architects become 'married' to certain technologies. This rigid adherence to familiar tools, at the peril of the business, often blindsides one to emerging technologies that competitors may be leveraging to gain market share. An open-minded, curious approach not only ensures relevance in a rapidly evolving field but also positions a business to capitalize on innovative solutions, thus driving market competitiveness and success.

It is essential to focus on the principles and concepts of Architecture. Aspects such as TOGAF, Concepts around loose/tight coupling of services, non-functional requirements (like Load Balancing, Disaster Recovery), common design patterns will continue even if new technologies and areas come into play.
