An example that I’ve seen is to reduce waste by choosing solar panels more responsibly; creating solar panels that last and perform for decades. Eventually they will need to be replaced but will significantly reduce the waste sent to recycle or to landfill. From a 2021 report, approx. 50% of the total materials in a PV module can be recovered but currently many countries recover much less and pollute the surroundings by dumping waste into landfills.

Know where your supply chain occurs & how each component is made, from what resources, and know the chain of custody. These 3 critical bits of info are telling. Know what each company supplying the component stands for. Greenwashing is rampant in solar. There are too many subsidies available for it not to occur. Then add almost scientific terms and the components you use could cause your design to be ethically compromised in such a way as you rationalize a bad choice. Then you are forced into continuing an endeavor that hits a much lower mark than you intended.
