In my experience, preserving the top layer of the soil has been the greatest allied to maintain soil humidity levels and ensure water availability during dry periods. The other important factor is the planting machine set-up. During the planting operations, the “decompacting” rods must be adjusted to go deep into the soil (minimal 50cm). This enables plants to develop longer roots and access water and minerals at a lower level.
