Acknowledging these emotions is the first step towards moving past denial or resentment. This self-awareness lays the groundwork for your next steps, guiding you towards recovery and growth.

Failure - we’re supposed to embrace it as a great character builder, but the reality is that a setback can suck. It’s okay to acknowledge your hurt, lick your wounds and then assess and learn from your missteps so you can orchestrate your comeback era. Develop a plan of action that includes networking, updating your skills, refining your personal brand, and exploring new opportunities. Seek support from mentors, peers, or career coaches who can guide and inspire you. Stay positive, motivated, and focused on your goals, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. A career setback is not a dead-end, but an opportunity to learn, grow, and rise stronger than before.

In my opinion this step is the most important one in the process of recovering from career setbacks in PR. Assess all of your options, and determine which ones provide the greatest potential now. Brainstorm ideas, and talk to your network to explore a broad range of opportunities. Break down your strategy into a detailed career plan. Using what you've learned about yourself and what you need to improve, determine what you now need to accomplish. Start working toward your goals now even if you haven't fully overcome your negative feelings. With each step that you take, your self confidence will increase. You'll be motivated to keep moving forward, and you'll believe in yourself more and more.

It's important to also have a support network that helps you see the opportunity and not focus on the negative. I've found that having people around me, both personally and professionally, who get me to see a situation differently has helped tremendously.

Some of the best moments that I've had in my career started during a time that most would classify as a setback. I've often found that the most challenging times put my professional skills to work in a different and meaningful way. So, rather than viewing it as a setback, think of it as an opportunity, and approach it head on with excitement for whatever is next, knowing full well that you created the path.
