How can you recognize and reward employee achievements without using money?

Exit interviews provide valuable insights into organizational strengths and weaknesses, helping identify areas for improvement in work culture and management practices, ultimately aiding in the enhancement of employee retention and satisfaction. Additionally, they offer a platform for departing employees to share constructive feedback, contributing to ongoing organizational growth and development.

I find holding regular 1:1s with your team members creates opportunities for both parties to provide constructive feedback and catch up with each other. I am currently using the FAST structure (feelings, activities, successes and targets) asking open questions to engage how they are feeling towards their fortnight, understanding their barriers and what challenges they have outcome and how. What support they need? Asking them what has been a highlight for them or what they have learnt. Understanding their development focuses and upcoming goals. Allowing time to provide feedback for continuous improvement for our relationship expectations, communication, our team and organisation. I once was told “feedback is a gift” which I 100% agree.

Recognising small wins and work anniversaries contributes to team members feeling valued. As a team leader I believe it’s important to take time to understand each team members appreciation language and show your appreciation to how they recognise and appreciate.

I’ve found sending cards of recognition can have a positive contribution to the culture within our organisation. I will praise team members via MS teams for demonstrating our values or for the support shown towards their colleagues and/or our customers. I encourage my team to have these moments of acknowledgment, being curious and asking who they would like to acknowledge and why in our 1:1s.

Working with individuals to understand their professional or personal goals through their PDRP. Being curious to understand on how I can best support them. I am committed to offering encouragement and support when new opportunities arise for my team, helping them to navigate challenges by discussing alternative approaches, helping to highlight a different solution.

Rewards may be intrinsic, so ask, ask, ask! Whether you’re able to provide exactly the amount of individualization each employee might need, by utilizing the ability to listen and respond will go a long way to establish a connection and trust.
